Blues guitar conundrum…

Hi guys,

I’m toying with the idea of buying a hollow-body guitar for bluesin’ around the house. I play at home directly to a combo amp, no pedals; I do it for my own pleasure and to practice and get better. Therefore, I’m looking for a guitar that looks nice, plays good and that can inspire me to keep on playing. Here are the candidates:

Epiphone Casino Coupe
http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Electrics/Archtop/Casino-Coupe.aspx
Fender Modern Player Telecaster Thinline Deluxe (whoa! that’s a long name)
http://shop.fender.com/en-CH/electric-guitars/telecaster/modern-player-telecaster-thinline-deluxe/0241202500.html#prefn1=refinement-body-shape&srule=price-low-to-high&sz=12&start=1&prefv1=Telecaster&cgidx=electric-guitars

Obvious similarities:
• P90-P90 configuration
• 2 volumes + 2 tones
• 3-way switch
• 22 frets

Not-so obvious differences
• Fender? Vs Epiphone pickups
• ~42mm nut
• 9-42 (Fender) vs 10-46 (Epi) strings
• 25.5” (Fender) vs 24.75” (Epi) scale length
• 1-piece maple “C” Shape nech 9.5” radius (Fender) vs 60’s SlimTaper Mahogany neck with Rosewood finderboard 12” radius (Epi)
• 6-saddle vintage-style strat strings-through-body hardtail bridge (Fender) vs LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge + Coupe Trapeze stoptail (Epi)
• Both made in China?

Here in Switzerland they both sell for about $500, any other suggestions would be welcome. I’ve never had a guitar with P90 so this would be a new sound, also I’ve never had a hollow body electric, but I’ve owned plenty of acoustics. Like I said, I play only at home through a small amp, and sometimes unplugged or through my iPhone with headphones. Advise and comments on both guitars are needed!

Cheers,
Walter

P.S. If you live in Zürich and want to get together and jam, send me a PM.

Re: Blues guitar conundrum…

Casinos are fully hollow, and have a louder acoustic (unplugged) sound. I have a full-sized one, it's a nice guitar in tone & feel.

Tele Thinlines are semi-hollow, the acoustic chamber is only in the top part of the body (one F hole). The closest Epi equivalent would be a 339 semi-hollow, which has a solid center block & two acoustic chambers (top and bottom, two F holes).

Another guitar to consider is an Epi Joe Pass hollowbody. There's a touring Florida blues guitarist (JP Soars) that plays one.

Don't know about availability in Europe, but:

1. Hollow body- Gretsch is king
There are so many semi and full hollow bodies here in the US in $450-800 price range and I love all of them

2. Thinline-
A little out of the box, Ibanez makes 2 really nice models- Inexpensive, play great and superb tone for stock pups
- Neither are p90s but , I am planning on getting one to swap out pick guards to test different pickups and I'm sure a p90 will get involved-
- I liked the feel of the Talman a little more (I like thin wide necks), but I like the configuration of the RC365 a little better
-I think the Talman is ash and the RC365 is mahognaey/maple

Great riffs to show off the Roadcore here-

PS- the closest I have ever made it to Zurich is lake Lugano, that trip was amazing, and I imagine that you have even better views.

While I think either of them will play blues well, it is up to your needs, really. I think they have a different 'feel'. The Tele will be more direct, stingy, and cut through more in a band context. The Casino would be my choice for playing at home, though. It is louder acoustically, and will cover a wider frequency range.

either would be good depending on what you want. the shorter scale and warmer tone of the casino, the tele will be spankier and brighter... both are cool guitars
