Blues in a Fat Strat

The forum search tool didn't provide any help. Probably because no one in their right mind would do this...

I'm playing blues on a Fat Strat. I know I should have a standard, but I don't. My other guitar is a PRS with JB bridge and Jazz neck, so I don't want to duplicate that sound.

So - I'm thinking of this arrangement for the Fat Strat:

Vintage staggered in the neck
Custom Staggered reverse polarity reverse wound in middle
Pearly Gates in the bridge position

Will this work? If not, please criticize and guide a lost soul to better choices.

It should work beautifully. The only differences I would make would be in the neck and mid. I would go with a pair of APS-2's. I reccommend these because they are still vintage output strat pickups, but they are a bit smoother and fatter than a vintage strat unit.

Re: Blues in a Fat Strat

The key would be to split that bridge humbucker in position 4.

If you decide to split, you're gonna have to use the normal polarity single at the middle, and the RWRP single at the neck.

Re: Blues in a Fat Strat

I play blues on my Fat Strat, but what I like is probably different than anybody else. I have an SSL-1 in the neck, SSL-5 in the middle, and a Distortion in the bridge. The two single coils now share one tone control and the Distortion has a tone control so I can turn down the treble. When I mix the SSL-5 with the Distortion, I have a lot of variety and can get a fat, overdriven tone.

Re: Blues in a Fat Strat

I would say TB11 for the bridge ; lots of mids to play the blues
There is some nice clips of tb11 vs tb14 ( or al2 vs al5 ) to check the mids for blues .

Great advice so far - thanks!

I can't find any reference on the SD website about the tb11 vs tb14 recommendation. Where do I find info about these?

Here is mine. ;)

You could consider a funky wiring using a resistor, because then you could have a 500K volume pot for the bridge position, and 250K whenever the middle and neck single coils are active.

I' ve been doing a lot of listening and have finally decided on a somewhat different approach. I already have another guitar with the JB and Jazz combination (PRD Santana SE), so I want a different sound when I switch guitars. For my Fat Strat, I'll use SH-11 Custom Custom in the bridge and a set (including RWRP middle) of SSL-5 Custom Staggered in the neck and middle positions.

I want to completely replace the pickguard assembly so I can return to stock later, so I will be buying new switch, pots, etc. Should I stick with the 250K/500K set-up?
