Blues Soloing?

Re: Blues Soloing?

I've been playing along with some Blues tracks on Youtube, and it's really helped me a lot actually. Thanks a bunch guys. Now come Monday, I can start playing and sounding like I know what I'm doing.

Freddie King.

Watch.

Listen.

Learn.

Everyone has given good advice. Attitude is super important. I see on youtube alot of the time a bunch of guys who sound like they are just going through the motions of llaying the blues from an tech standpoint. They play their scales, and hit all the right notes for eeach chord, but they do not know how to leave space, or play off tbe beat. Knowing when not to play, when to play, is key.

Re: Blues Soloing?

I find if you can get the rythm you want to solo over on a loopstation or something. Then just sit down and listen to it while you play around on your guitar after awhile you will soon here whats working and whats not. I mostly play metal but i have friends who play jazz and i can often make something to suite easy enough by just listening to the chords and using my ear.

Blues Soloing?

What song are you playing and what are the changes? Is it just a standard 12 bar or do you have some unique chord voicings in the piece? This will figure in to what you will play

Blues Soloing?

Building a solo is really complex. Robben Ford has a video on you tube but the key is not to start too fast. Use easy phrases that are easy to remember then build off of them. Blues is all about feeling the notes not how many you can squeeze into a 12 bar measure

Re: Blues Soloing?

this site has a wealth of info on blues theory and structure and some very useful lessons and samples. Make sure you get to the "advanced soloing: Cream" page. Good stuff

It's basically a straight forward 12 bar blues thing in the key of F. I worked for about a week to learn the scales and modes. I know the notes. I didn't know how to approach the rhythms to it. Thanks a lot for the help guys.

Re: Blues Soloing?

I went to school today, and it worked out well. My teacher said it was the best he had heard from me.
Glad to hear it went well! I played at a couple of talent shows when I was in high school and had only been playing a couple of years, and they went pretty awkwardly.

You're in luck in that I think blues is a style where you can listen to or watch videos of your favorite guitarists and pick up a lot of cool stuff. At least that's how it has been for me. Trying that with shredders or jazz guitarists never worked for me. I can watch their hands and still be clueless to how they do what they do. But with blues I've learned a lot that way.
But like shred or jazz, I think it's still important to have your timing thing together. So I'll second the suggestions to play to backing tracks, and if it hasn't been mentioned, practice with a metronome... even for playing blues solos. You have to hear the shuffle/swing then in your head, but you'll still develop a rock-solid sense of time. That's one of the things that make great blues guitarists sound so "in the groove".

Best of luck with your continued journey of discovery on the guitar.

Re: Blues Soloing?

Also get a solid vibrato technique. Guys like Paul Kossoff could made a bold statement on just a single note.
