Blues!

Re: Blues!

Wow, whenever you post a youtube link, they are videos I've seen somewhat recently. First the double handed tapping jazz wonder (whose name escapes me) and now joe pass.

Weird :eek13:

Re: Blues!

never seen joe pass play the blues, so this is nice. Great guitarist.....totally heavy on the theory side (and skills!)......but still enjoyable to listen to

Re: Blues!

joe pass is a good guitarist.
he doesnt use a lot of techniques,
but he knows music for sure.. ;)

Re: Blues!

HAHAHA! Joe Pass doesn't use a lot of techniques!? :chairfall I'll have to remember that one! Maybe you mean that he doesn't use common blues techniques of the rotgut whiskey bluesmen! Bends and such? But who needs it when you can sound like that?

Joe Pass uses a signature walking baseline style . He uses his own system of chord organization. He has full proficiency with the fretboard.

His techniques are his harmonic pallette that very few players have. He is not just a good guitarist - but one of the top in the world, ever.

Re: Blues!

ROFL! People always criticize me when I talk about technique junkies in a less than flattering way! ROFL! That clip proves my point! Thanks!

It just seems to me that so many players (particularly those who play "modern styles") lose sight of the overall objective and simply go gah gah over technique. But the reason that technique exists in the first place is to facilitate expression. If you can't express yourself then who cares about your technique!? :chairfall It's sorta like a comedian that has great delivery, but bad jokes! :chairfall

The same people think it's as simple as playing modes over everything without knowing anything about melodic construction! It's really funny! All they want is to know what scale to play vs a chord so that they can run the hell out of it and call it a solo! ROFL! Its sorta like saying that picking real fine lumber is the same thing as building a house! ROFLMAO! Sorry, but all that will give you is a pile of really fine lumber! Nothing even closely resembling a house.

Re: Blues!

What Martino does in this video is amazing.

It's so damn difficult to play the guitar alone and let it sound interesting.

He's great and if that's not technique I dunno what technique is :chairfall

Cheers..great video.
