BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

Accidently deleted the photos (to drive Aceman nuts) but I picked it up last week. Went right into the studio with it and cut a few tracks for my band's latest. Thing flat out rocks! Reminds me a lot of my Faded Standard. I like the pickups too oddly enough. Kind of funky looking but it grows on you.

Looks exactly like this

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

2013 ... I didn't post about it but ended up picking up a 2013 70's Tribute a couple months back from an independent dealer (long time friend of mine). It was under $600 OTD (new/nos). Figured the dirty fingers would be out of it by now but I'm still having too much fun with them.

Hope you got a good deal. Congrats and enjoy the hell out of it.

Thanks

Got a ridiculous deal on it, was just going to flip it but I love it.

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

Congrats Scott.

You have been scoring big on the singlecuts here lately.

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

I think some of the less expensive Gibsons end up sounding so good because they're light and have thin finish. The unfinished necks have a nice feel too.

The first thing I noticed on that model was the black Kluson tuners. They look great and I'm surprised they haven't been around since the beginning.

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

i dig that. not as fancy looking as nickel with binding but looks a hell of a lot more rock and roll

Agreed on all counts

The fretwork is stellar on it, plek'd from what I read. I got it used but no one ever played the damn thing from what I can tell. I didn't do a thing to it other than tune it. I literally took it from the store to the studio.

Wasn't looking for it, just happened to be there when I was shopping for a fuzz

Already flipped the Ibanez, it was an extremely nice guitar. Just had too many good offers to say no. It actually went to the guy that taught me to play so that was really cool.

Wow. Pretty wild.

Do you feel the lpj trumps the ibby?

Fwiw- I am also a believer in the thin finishes Gibson uses on its inexpensive guitars.

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

Trumps it.....mmm I don't know? Not really. They're both very good guitars. The pickups in the Ibanez were almost magical, 3-D, kind of like legit PAFs. The Ibanez was more refined and had such a sweet patina to every part. That's pretty tough to beat. The Gibson is nice and light, very toneful and the pups just grind especially thru the Orange. A lot more of what I use all the time and a great match to my other LPs both Gibson and Epi.

I like that I don't have to worry about the LPJ, the Ibanez I would freak if I did anything to it to take away from how nice it was. The LPJ is like a good pair of workboots, you know that it's made to work hard without any fuss or worry. The Ibanez was more vintage sports car and I would treat it accordingly. It was a fairly rare model and while I totally appreciate it's rarity and beauty my guitars get covered in beer and sweat a lot more than they get TLC. The Ibanez could be my retirement guitar haha

As for the finishes, I always like thin finishes. My Faded Standard has worn in perfectly. Feels like the best pair of jeans I ever had!

I bought a Studio 60s Tribute in 2013 on clearance at AMS for $729. I gutted is tossed the Burstbuckers and the circuit board for 50s wiring with orange drops and a JB and 59 and that guitar smokes!
Fantastic neck, it resonates great with the thin finish and is fat as hell. Those are a best buy if you want a Lester to hot rod and not care if it gets a little mojo on it from being a workhorse axe.

Funny, same here. Got the 70's tribute from a dealer friend who was keeping it in the back. Wasn't in the market to buy anything. Couldn't turn down a "cheap" LP that Gibson really got right.

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

Yeah for sure.

I've been into flipping guitars a bit recently so I figured worst case scenario I'd make a few bucks on it.
