BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

So much cleaner without the poker chip (and I love that there are no pickguard screw holes)

O **** ...an original Naughahyde Monster!! OMG!!! (I had one, I got conned out of it at a toy show- It might well be worth a thousand dollars today. Never seen another in all my life besides the one I had). On my bucket list to get another before I die!!

Congrats on a great score!!! Without the poker chip, looks kinda like the LTD EC400at I once had. (it only had 3 knobs and the gold was lighter) that was a sustain MONSTER! Never shoulda sold it.

What Ibanez is it you rolled??

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

Congrats! I have an SGJ with roughly the same pickups. Despite the black covers, they're the same pickups as in older LP Studios, LP Customs, and SGs-- for the SGJs both are 490 (one "R," one "T"), for the LPJs they're 490/498. While these pickups were often underrated to the point of being maligned, I always liked them (I have the 490/498 pair in a Les Paul Studio Doublecut).

I'm not big on the black covers, though. I found an easy reversible fix, though. A couple pair of Bobbin Toppers can be applied to the tops of the covers, and it gives the pickups, at a glance at least, the appearance of open coils. (The Toppers can be peeled off later with no damage to the existing covers.) I thought the SGJ looked a little plain without a pickguard also, so I modded a small guard (the mod is necessary due to the 24 frets, but is an easy fix-- 2 straight cuts to the "tab" between the pickups) and stuck that on. I really like the way it turned out.

Plus, it was brand new on closeout, for next to nothing.

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

I love to flip gear, selling that Ibanez was great. I made a few bucks on it and got it a forever home. LOL

I have a few ideas for the LPJ but they need to gel a bit first.

Re: BNGD - Gibson LPJ Goldtop

Sold it to the guy who taught me to play, he rarely buys guitars and I don't know if he's ever sold one.
