Re: Bogner Alchemist in action
I got to play it before Gearjoneser did, NYAH NYAH NYAH!!
Ok now that I got that out of the way...
I met up with ION (aka Andy) at the Coach House at load-in time before the show and he hauled his stuff up on stage while we chatted. He was running an Alchemist head (the Beta version IIRC) with two Alchemist 2x12 cabs side-by-side, a Line 6 M13 pedal board, and the Alchemist footswitch. His axe was a Telecaster with a maple MIM neck, an Affinity body, and Bill Lawrence Keystone pickups.
FTR, Andy is a super-cool dude, very friendly, knowledgeable and affable and he knows his stuff on his gear! We chatted while he set up his rig and I watched while his band Chime soundchecked, then after they were done with that he gave me the Tele and let me play a few licks through it.
From a listening standpoint, I was very impressed with the tone. Sounds much better than the YouTube clips I’ve seen… less bluesy and more straight-up modern rock. The basic controls are really straightforward and easily understandable, and the DIP switches make for plenty of tonal options on the amp. Clean, the amp was very even sounding, clear, articulate, and smooth with a nice chime on the top end. A nice full sounding American-style clean. The mid-gain sounds were really neat… very vocal and ballsy with cool articulation and a little bit of snarl. Andy used it to good effect on a few spots in the set. The drive channel was COOL. Loaded with 2nd-order harmonics and very rich sounding. Tight bottom end, clear and punchy mids, and a top that was aggressive but not harsh. Nice tones!
Playing it with the Tele was a treat. Very smooth and easy feeling, which is sort of a Bogner hallmark if I’m not mistaken. I couldn’t play it at gig-level volume due to soundcheck being over and the crowd being let in at the time but it sounded GREAT at lower volume, which was a nice surprise. Chords rang out with great articulation and note separation and single note lines flowed. It even had that cool tubular howl using the neck pickup in the upper register. Very even and clean-sounding and FEELING overall.
My time with the amp was very limited so Andy didn’t get to show me everything it could do but I got a good taste of it. I’m anxious to see these amps out in stores, they’re a kick to play! It sounded like a really great all-around rock/hard rock amp Thumbs up from me!
Hats off to Andy and thanks again for the sneak preview! I really appreciated it!
BTW Chime is a cool band! Go see ‘em if they play near you, I had fun listening to their music.
