Bogner Ecstasy Blue Demo

I hope it will be useful to somebody some time...

Best,

B

PS. This video ended up being a bit long. The reason is that the first part is my Gibson MM with a Brobucker and Lil59, and the second part is with my Fender Strat.

Re: Bogner Ecstasy Blue Demo

Cool demo Doc!

I'm watching/listening right now.

It's funny...that pedal sounds good, much better than most pedals that make the "amp in a can" claim except for when the mids are below about noon...the scooped sounds you dial in are funny!

As soon as the mids dip down to 9 o'clock or so the pedal all the sudden goes form a really natural distortion to sounding plastic and fake!

I think that's proof that the midrange content is always the hardest to dial in!

Re: Bogner Ecstasy Blue Demo

Still watching and based on your demo and the others I've seen I am assuming that the Blue sounds "best" with the gain at half or better??

I don't see a lot of demos where the gain is set low...it seems to loose some punch on less than half...is that true?

Re: Bogner Ecstasy Blue Demo

Now THAT is how I like to see a demo....thanks Doc ! :beerchug:

Is there much of a tone difference when the bass isn't dimed ?

Interested in hearing Gearjoneser's take on this. He's the only one I know around here that HAS an Ecstasy.

Icant wait to see this tonight! I watched the red and UBER demos last night. (this am about 2) and thought they were good ! The Uber sounds huge! I saw another demo of the red and it seemed awesome.. I take from yours that you didnt think much of it.? Whats your toughts on the blue when compared directly to the red? one more useful than the other? both, not so much? (sorry if you answered this in the vid..)

Honestly, the pedal has only moderate gain on the standard rhythm channel, so for the "clean" base that most people really like theirs with, you kinda need to turn up the gain to compensate (you won't really have an authoritative crunch tone with it set much lower). With my Vibrolux Reverb, I've started using some of the "gainier" switch settings (blue mode instead of plexi, 20th anniversary model instead of the 100 or 101 settings, etc.) and I find I like the gain at half. I could probably set it a little lower if I didn't have the variac on, but I like the slight compression it adds as it gives it that classic Bogner flavor. There is a sweet spot with the pedal for sure; I've found that the boost channel is a bit too much for most realistic applications, so setting the rhythm sound lower in gain is the best way to kick in the boost and still have it sound somewhat coherent (otherwise you get a pretty wild swirl of gain and compression... probably cool for shredheads, but not so much for the classic rock and roll and blues players).

The pedal is way better than I originally gave it credit from the early demos of it. Sounds more like an amp in a stompbox than anything else I've used and I like it enough that I don't care that I don't have a Shiva anymore and I'm going to be selling my tweed amp due to how much I like it through my Vibrolux (especially at night time when I needed some crunch at bedroom volumes). YMMV, but I've found that anything with some real compression or midrange doesn't meld very well with the pedal. With an amp with a fair amount of clean headroom and a slight midrange scoop though, this pedal is just plain magic.

Great. Thanks a lot. Now I want $850 worth of Bogner pedals that I'd barely heard of before your demos. :9:

Re: Bogner Ecstasy Blue Demo

I briefly messed with them at GC, and mostly wanted to know how versatile they are. They all sound like good 'amp in a box' emulations, so the better you are at integrating one into your rig, the better it'll sound.

For my own taste, I like OD's that are neutral amp enhancers, meaning most of the gain comes from the amp, then I bump it up a tiny bit. So for my applications, something subtle like the Klon or T Rex Moller is better. But for a Bogner Ecstasy sound out of a clean tube amp, these Bogner pedals are a better fit.

Nice demo as usual Doc. What are some of your favorite OD and Dist pedals so far?

Re: Bogner Ecstasy Blue Demo

Sounds like my perfect dirt pedal!
I hate pedals that muffle the original tone, that sound crunchy with lots of gain but farty and weak with the gain rolled back.
For example, the Metal Zone and my Metal Muff + Top Boost.

That's why I prefer the very cheap and IMO very good Marshall Jackhammer (OD mode, the Dist is terrible) over more expensive pedals.
And it seems the Bogner Blue has the same basic qualities I like from the Marshall,
(namely, transparency) but on a completely different level. Wow.

Thanks Christian. I am glad to see you like it. And I agree, the mids are the key. And that was the whole point of that particular part...

The pedal sorta takes off with the gain around noon. Volume boost is not bad at all, yet that pedal is a bit pricey for being a "clean" boost pedal you know... With this setup, I could not find very good tones with the gain set low.

To me the best tone out of the box with my Melody Maker and Fender Blues Jr. is around 1:40 and 3:00.

Of course, it is all about tastes and all...

The bass thing depends on the amp. Blues Jr. is already somewhat boxy sounding and lacks the thumb that this pedal is sorta "simulating"... (Still, I love Blues Jr.'s...) So in this particular instance, to me the best tone was with the bass cranked up all the way.

Out of the 3, I like the Uberschall pedal the most. It has kinda weird clarity, lotsa gain but still has a nice clean tone to it. And it is different than both the red and the blue. So me liking the Uberschall pedal more is just due to my personal tastes you know... On the other hand, I'd go with the blue if the choice were to be between the red and the blue. Blue sorta can do some of the low gain settings of the red. And I do not care much about the more gainey stuff that the red is doing... Then again, it is all personal tastes.

I think you may like to hear that I've done some videos comparing the blue and red with Lovepedal Amp11, Xotic BB+, Okko Diablo Gain+, and some few others that I am forgetting about... But I need more time to edit them... I gotta get me a new computer, because editing videos is sorta taking a lot of time on my current one.

Thanks GJ.

And... I am thinking just like you. My to die for pedal into my DIY plexi (68 preamp specs with a plate voltage of 390V) is a PaulC Timmy. It is transparent, and makes the amp work. I also like Xotic EP... again it is a boost. Am using it with the dial set around 9 to 10 o'clock. Some others are Lovepedal Eternity, MJM Phantom, Barber Tone Press... Then again those are TS type of pedals. And when it comes to more gainey stuff Zendrive and Xotic Andy Timmons' BB are the ones I really liked.

But then again... this (the one of the demo) is a completely different approach. The whole clean amp and dirt pedal thing is nice, but still I strictly prefer having a good amp and use some transparent pedal to make the amp work...

PS. Is the T-Rex Moller that good? I mean in the same league as a Klon? Just wondering...

Re: Bogner Ecstasy Blue Demo

That is a hell of a demo! Very nice playing too. I keep waiting for you to breakout in Stranglehold...

Re: Bogner Ecstasy Blue Demo

Interesting... there were tones in there I really liked and ones I didn't like at all. I guess it's all in how you dial it in and what amp you've got, presumably.

The only think I really miss about my Bogner Ecstasy 101b is the blue channel... godly! I wish I could have one amp with JUST the blue channel on it. I guess that's the idea behind the pedal right? I'll have to check one out.
