Bogner Shiva 1x12. Wutcha think?

Stevo

Tonus Maximus Pacificas
I have been drooling over the clips on the Bogner site, and I've been interested in Bogner since I heard Gearjonser's Ecstasy at the UGD :naughty:
Is this a "big" sounding 1x12? I have owned a few 1x12s in the past and they have all sounded small to me.. plenty of volume, but the 1 speaker sounded thin in a band mix. I have never owned a 1x12 of this caliber though :scratchch
What kind of price range is reasonable for a good used amp? I'm thinking $1600-$1800 American.
Hmmm.. I have the bug.. TALK ME OUT OF IT! :laugh2:

Great amps! You're thinking the correct price range ;) Bogner cabinets have a funny way of sounding huge, you won't have to worry about "small" tone. The 80w EL34 equipped one has more than enough volume or balls to hang in any live mix.

Only bad thing? It needs a little volume to get really sounding good. This is not a "low volume" amp.

Re: Bogner Shiva 1x12. Wutcha think?

I played the Shiva combo about a month ago at Ultrasound in NYC.

To tell you the truth, the Victoria combo sitting next to it blew it away. The Bogner had this honky, cupped-hands midrange that I couldn't dial out no matter how I adjusted the EQ.

Re: Bogner Shiva 1x12. Wutcha think?

I wonder if Bogner is catering to the "scooped mids" craze with that Celestion 80 speaker? It isn't my favorite. I would probably have to shop around for a midrangy speaker. That will probably be a challenge, considering the wattage. The higher wattage speakers seem to want more push before the mids come to life.

Ben,

Which Victoria were you playing through?
They had two in the room; One was the Double Deluxe and the other was the Tremolo/Reverb one, the big one. But I only played the Double Deluxe.

Those are killer amps...I still want a good tweed Deluxe...or 2!

The Shiva 1-12 is a great amp, but I'd be more inclined to pick up a head for a few hundred cheaper, if I were you. I think they sound a little better with a closed back 2-12 or 4-12. They're definitely amps with a rich midrange, so it's possible they went with a more scooped sounding speaker to voice the combo better.

Last time I played a 1-12 combo was at Westwood Music, on Westwood Blvd, between Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd. I was playing it pretty loud, and the owner of the store ran down the stairs from his office, and into the amp room. I thought he was trippin on the volume, but he ran in and said "I had to see what amp on my floor was being played, because it sounded so great!!"

That's a great store, since they've got Bogner, Matchless, Victoria, Roccaforte, Maven Peal, Dr. Z, and Mojave. Today, I'm going down to an outdoor show at the Federal Building, to see a friend's band play, and will be hanging out with Todd from revolutionguitar.com I'm also going to his Ebay warehouse to check out the amp that he swears is the greatest amp of all time....the Fargen VOS. Todd has a big amp collection, including a bunch of vintage Marshalls. He's telling me that the VOS destroys every amp in his arsenal. It's a 1 channel amp. Too bad it's over $2200!

OK Mr Bogner :13: I will probably take your advice on this.. I just happen to have a 4x12 around, with decent speakers :D

I hope I'm not hijacking too much but...

I brought over my LP with 50th Ann. Seths and wrung out that Fargen VOS for about an hour. The first thing I noticed is that it sounds like a 50W Plexi with a tube rectifier, a bit more gain, and the absolute perfect volume.....less than a Marshall. One thing is for sure, it SCREAMS Billy Gibbons!!! From ZZ Top to early VH, it's THE amp for those tones. It really was a joy to play through.

The Bogner Shiva is a two channel amp with a great clean channel and a very versatile, tight, and gainy OD channel.....a bit tighter and more focused than the Fargen. The Fargen sounds more vintage and has a bit more sag, but still stays composed, even when dimed. I think they sell for $2150 at revolutionguitar, but they're a serious amp. The whole time I played it, I just kept thinking how ZZ Top it sounds....you could get early ZZ or the muddier greasy tone from Mescalero out of it. I think if I was looking for a main workhorse, I'd go for a Shiva, but for a one channel bluesrock amp, the Fargen VOS is just plain sick.....I need to be wealthy, because I'd love to have one. I could have played that very fun amp all day! :13:
