Bogner Shiva: EL34 Vs 6L6 Version

I'm seriously considering buying one of these as my ultimate amp (at least until I can afford an Ecstacy... :32: )

Which of the two versions is generally considered to be best? Can you describe the difference for me? I'd imagine the cleans might be better with the 6l6 version. Any general comments on the amp would also be appreciated.

I'd want a combo by the way, as a head+cabinet is too much work for me. If anyone has seen one for sale recently, let me know! :newangel:

Well one thing, the 6l6 is 60 watts and the el34 is 80 watts

theres sound clips and a detailed description of both on bogners website

PM Gearjonser. He knows all about Bogner, and will be happy to rant about it for days :D

The Bogner XTC seems to have a lot more power and thump to the sound. It is much more versatile. For most hard rock/metal players, this will give you everything you could ever want from an amp (pretty much).

The Shiva is no joke though. It has better cleans than the XTC (which might make it worth more to some people right there). The distortion is great as well (one clip that was posted in the sound clips section blew me away).

When I was choosing what my new amp was to buy, it came down to the Bad Cat Hot Cat 30 or the Bogner Shiva. Knowing full well I didn't need 60w, I went with the Bad Cat (and am pretty happy with it). The cleans are reminiscent of a BF Fender, whereas the Bad Cat winks towards Vox with it's chimey type vibe. The Shiva is an amazing amp, no doubt about that and I'd pick it over most amps out there.

The 6L6 version sounds like is uses old 6CA7 EL-34's, has that round bottom.....I like that version the best, sounds like an old good Marshall without the hassles of being over 30 years old;)
Versatile....versatile...yeah maybe that is good??
I'll personally just buy more amps:D
The Shiva is awesome.

They usually go used for around 1500 dollars on ebay. Don't know where you can buy one new though.

I've plugged into both combos, but never when they were next to each other for a true comparison. Honestly, the preamp section is the same on both amps, which is a bigger part of the sound, but both have great clean tones, and I may prefer the OD on the EL-34 version. It's interesting that even Bogner EL-34 clean tones aren't that distant sounding from 6L6. I think it's because the preamp sections are voiced so much like a Fender Twin that the only difference is that the clean breakup is better than Fender. Fender edgy clean tones often get blatty in the lows, while the Shiva won't. As far as the gain, Bogners pound the power tubes with voltage so they sound 'swelled up' at most volumes. The Bogner gain is all about it's preamp, which is the best in the business.

A friend of mine has the 2-12 6L6 for which he traded his other EL-84. He's got a Fender Custom Shop Esquire, and according to him, the reason for the trade was that the 6L6's do a better job with the single coil. Much better for that Fender clean that Gearjonser was talking about.

As for gain, if there is too much (and is there?) it would be in a Bogner. Huge, rich full-WOW!
