Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

I love that metal grill!!!! Mine has a green power light like your basket-weave one. I may try to record a clip tonight!

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

The Bogner on the right belongs to me. The one on the left is Marcus Eliopulos's from Stabbing Westward. It was a nice Bogner photo op. I actually bought that halfstack from him and resold it.

Mine came with the black grill headshell, but I got lucky and found a new canefront headshell on Ebay for $220, so I have both and can have 2 options.
I have the 4-12 Vin 30 and large 2-12 Vin 30.

The amp I'm most excited about is the new Bogner Duende, which will be released at NAMM. I don't even wanna know the price!

Nice guys... I'll be joining the Bogner family sometime this week when I get ahold of a Bogner EL-34 Shiva head w/ reverb :D

I think one reason why Bogners get a bad rep is because of the compression. They have a very unique tone that some people love (like me) and other people can't stand. I would rather take an XTC 101B over a Classic because I dig that fat, compressed smooth overdrive.

One thing people don't realize is that that compression is actually tube compression, so it's very pleasing to the ear. Also, it can be changed a lot by the tubes you use, and how high you set the presence. Svetlanas compress more, so if you use JJ power tubes, the amp sounds more open, and if you set the presence controls past halfway, it sounds more wide open.

I play strats and teles 70% of the time, and LP's 30% of the time, and recently I just stumbled on one of my favorite tones......A Tele with Chubtone 3/5's into the Bogner. It's one of the best single coil tones I've ever gotten.

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

Hey RGN,

have you heard the Deliverance VHT yet? how does that compare to the Bogner?

just wondering cause i am getting a Deliverance60 in a couple of weeks. i really like the VHT Cls but i think the Deliverance was more magical.

just wanted to know how they compare to the XTC

thanks!

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

I have heard many Deliverance clips but haven't seen one yet. It is weird because my buddy is a VHT dealer. I guess he may be selling them as fast as they come in. I hope to track one down soon.

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

hey RGN can you ask him what he thinks of the Deliverance compared to the Pitbull series?

thanks dude

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

I could really use the clips if you can record them.

Damn... all this Bogner talk is really trying to talk me into buying a Shiva next to my Einstein. We'll have to see if I really feel that way after a couple of years when I can really afford another really expensive amp!

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

It is a pretty spectacular piece of gear no doubt. It blew me away more in the first 10 minutes than any amp I have ever tried or owned. I didn’t realize until last night how much gain you can get out of the blue channel (I finally noticed the sample setting on the Bogner website). The blue channel (non-plexi mode) can nail any 80s type tone. Then there is the red channel with even more gain. I’ll take a pic and post it later. I am working on a full review with some clips. Huge, huge thumbs up. I don’t really know what more someone could ask for unless they were wanting an amp for steel guitar in a country band or something.

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

Words can't express how much I love the Ecstasy. I've used mine for 4 years now, and I can't plug into anything that I like better. The way it's laid out is pure genious, to Reinhold's credit. The mini switches do so much that you can literally shape each channel like modeling clay. If you heard someone switch between the 3 channels on that amp, you'd only be hearing a fraction of what it can do. You can control the smoothness, crunch, growl, bite, sustain.....it's really a limitless amp.

I'm really considering doing something I thought I'd never do.....selling the Matchless Chieftain to pay for that new Bogner Duende head that'll be released at NAMM. Of course, I haven't even heard it or seen it yet, but there's no doubt in my mind, it'll be the best low wattage amp out there........maybe the first 6V6 amp to sound like an improved 18W Marshall.

Cool...now how bad is the clean channel?

All that stuff you hear about the Ecstasy having a bad clean channel is pure BS.
It has a spectacular clean channel with enough range to cover a Twin to a JTM 45. It's an EL-34 amp, so it's cleans are British in nature, but better than any other EL-34 amp I've heard........closest I can think of would be a HiWatt.

Do you happen to know what the price range is of the Duende, Joe? Definitely sounds pretty cool, I'd just wonder about how much headroom they could possibly squeeze in an 18w combo. It does sound pretty cool though ;)

No. I don't know anything about it yet, other than the specs they listed on the Bogner site. If it's a big hit at NAMM, they'll sell a lot of them, I'd presume.
I'm not rich, so buying new may be out of the question. I'm guessing it'll be around the price of a new Shiva, but maybe a little more? Probably high $2000's.

The other amp that's exciting is the 65Amps London. That was the biggest hit at the LA Amp Show last Spring.

Yep, I got to play one at a local boutique store and was thoroughly impressed. The cleans had a nice shimmer/sparkle to them and the overdrive had a nice light clipping tone, it is an amazingly big and open sounding amp considering the wattage.

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

I think the clean channel is very nice. Much better than the VHT but probably not quite as good as the Diezel VH4. For the record, the Diezel has an absolutely amazing clean channel that is a cross between Fender and Hiwatt. The Diezel has ridiculous headroom on the clean channel. I haven't honestly spent enough time using the Bogner's clean channel to say much more. The blue and red channels are far more fun for now!! The clean channel has never been THAT important to me. For years I gigged using a DSL50 and its clean channel was fine for as much as I used it.

Re: Bogner XTC... should I buy it?

Here it is....
bognerxtc.jpg

It was custom ordered (or retrofitted by the dealer) with a salt/pepper front to match a Marshall cab. The dealer is going to switch it out so it matches my beloved 2X12 cab (the greatest overall cab I have ever owned) for free. That head with the Bogner cab is an explosive combination. I'd love to get a metal front but don't really want to drop $150 for it.
