bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
just got a neck for this project i'm working on. its slightly loose in the neck pocket.
is this really bad?

Re: bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

I've had some that were super tight and others that were not tight at all. Shouldn't be a problem once screwed down tightly.

Re: bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

...considering 95% of the neck "dangles in mid air"...no...

Re: bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

I have one of the Telebration Fender Teles roughly worth 2k dollars and you can fit a coin on each side of the neck pocket when the neck is on. Shouldn't be a problem.

Tighter the better, though. Same with the neck pockets ;)

That's a sad tale.

Well I have to admit, you can't actually fit a coin in there but there is a very notiable gap, that shouldn't be there. You'd think that Fender has had the time to fine tune their pocket and neck routing machines by now.

But it sounds and plays good, and stays in tune so no problem.

Another odd thing about this Telebration model (75 blcok tele custom) is that those are to celebrate Teles history and legacy and were limited special editions. Mine is ash body in natural finish and the best they can do is make the body out of 3 pieces... on a natural finish...

I have heard some strats/teles can be 5 piece or more. There's pics floating around the net i think. The neck pocket isn't good enough considering even cheap china kits can get it right. But if it plays good then who cares.

Yeah, if it plays good then who cares.

Me personally I wouldn't want anything more than 2 pieces for a Natural Finish...

Re: bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

Slightly loose should be fine. If it still does it after the bolts are tight, though, you might consider packing the gaps with some folded paper/business cards. Get the screws started so the neck is lined up properly then start jamming cards on either side in equal amounts to keep it straight.

Of all the Jackson neck swaps I've done, the neck felt a little loose in the pocket before bolting it in on most, but only had one where the neck moved after it was bolted on.

Re: bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

Using adhesive backed sandpaper for the shim works awesome to prevent neck slop if the pocket is loose. Then you can pack around it if you like, but not really necessary in most cases.

Also, be careful to resist the temptation to tighten the neck screws too far.

Re: bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

Yeah I got one that uses threaded inserts in the neck heel, and a previous owner cranked them so hard they've started to come unseated. At full tension, the neck pulls out of the front of the pocket. You tighten the neck bolts and all that does is bury the inserts further into the neck pocket.

I had to cut a piece of brass shim stock to fit the neck pocket that keeps the inserts from pulling out of the neck. It works, and the action is great, but it's a basic design flaw and user-error that should never have happened.

Re: bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

I believe that the sound quality comes from the compressed wood on the bottom of the neck pocket when you screw the neck on.

Sound-wise I wouldn't worry.

Re: bolt-on neck is slightly loose in neck pocket when not screwed in

Personally I like the neck to be snug. Is the neck finished? If it is I have had good results gluing paper to the sides of the pocket, if it's not adding a finish will tighten up the gap.

i've got some slices of flamed maple veneer i was thinking of gluing onto the sides. just for my own satisfaction and peace of mind. i don't think it will do very much to the tone or sustain
