Bolt-on Neck Repair

Re: Bolt-on Neck Repair

I have done the dowel fix in a much more involved problem (AANJ - without neck heel stop) and I had problems : if the dowel's wood is oily (rosewood) and the dowel is round, in the summer , the glue might fail and it may start slipping under excessive torque. The dowel has to be hex-shaped, and also the new holes.

Where can you get hex-shaped dowels? I've never seen them.

Also, please tell me how you drill the hex-shaped holes. Seems like that could be very useful. Must be pretty tricky though.

wrong english from my part. I should have said "I have had the dowel fix done" . My tech did this, but even this eventually failed. I don't know how he made those. In the end he replaced the whole piece in the neck heel and strengthened the basswood body with maple dowels and made the threads through body's neck heel pocket -> neck heel as one.
