Depends how much trem wanking you do and how big of dive bombs you like to do! Me, I am not much of a wanker so, give me Bone! If you like to dive bomb you stuff on a strat, slicker is better. Slipstone is a better choice that graphite IMO anyway!

+1.

Re: Bone nut or Graphite nut?

from my limited experience, i found graphite nuts mellowed the strings somewhat when played unfretted.

Re: Bone nut or Graphite nut?

Graphite nuts do rob you of some high end. I recently replaced the graphite nut on my Strat with a Tusq nut and it totally opened up the guitar. They sound almost identical to bone and are alot cheaper!

Re: Bone nut or Graphite nut?

I wank pretty hard on my strat and it has a vintage style 6 point trem, a bone nut, and Klusons. The secret is in a well cut nut and stringing the guitar properly.

BTW, I heard that Sadowsky recommended using Delrin for nuts if you have detuners on a bass or trem on a guitar. Any input on that, Dave?

Re: Bone nut or Graphite nut?

I like Bone nuts. I put a bone nut on my archtop and the tone improved tremedously over the plastic one. I noticed the same problem with a Carvin I used to own that had a graphite nut. That thing was just tone challenged beyond belief, and I think the nut was a big part of it.

Re: Bone nut or Graphite nut?

I'm a fan of graphite because it seems to save my strings from breaking.

Re: Bone nut or Graphite nut?

I like bone the best, although if a plastic nut is cut perfectly, I won't bother to change it.

One thing I'm wondering about is PRS guitars. They all come with graphite nuts, so I assume it's part of the sound.......and some people criticize the tone. I wonder if a PRS with a perfectly cut bone nut would make it sound even better?

Re: Bone nut or Graphite nut?

i put a bone nut on a cheap yamaha bass that sounded ok with a plastic nut, then i put a bone nut on it and it became punchy as hell and sounded better acoustically.

don't have much experience with graphite nuts but from what I've read around the internet it gives a darker sound but it saves your strings.
I don't use whammy bars so i'm voting for bone.

I think Joe has a good idea for the 1st anual SDUGF Guitar Expirement. Anybody with a PRS wanna experiment with nuts?
