Re: Bone Nut Vs. High tech Tusq?
I strongly support buying both.
I strongly support buying both.
…bone nuts are a pain they can break and shatter.
This happens all the time on my guitars.
And by all the time, I mean never.
Unless you're talking about the process of making a nut.
In which case I pay people to worry about that for me.

I have Tusq XL nut and saddle on my Hummingbird and Bone on my Advanced Jumbo. The only noticeable difference in tone is that the Hummingbird shimmers a little bit longer, is quite a bit louder and more articulate.
There are natural dead spots in bone that some would consider 'imperfections'. But, in reality, it's all in how the product is cut and if the damn thing will stay in tune.
I do like that the Tusq stuff comes pre-shaped and drops right in with little or no modification.
Thats what she said!
what about that 300.000 year old Wolly Mamoth stuff?
I'd be up for trying it, if it's fairly obtainable.
And regarding the talk about the nut impacting only the tone of the open strings: Well, yeah, but don't you care how your open strings sound?
Regardless of the material I've used,if the slots and depth are done right, the open strings have great tone...If the slots are too deep and or too tight, the tone will suck..
So is this.... I usually get the Tusq ones and they seem to be more consistent.

I've always liked bone, and that's the only material I've used to make my nuts (yes I make my own compensated nuts), so I can't compare it with Tusq. I will try some Tusq nuts soon so I will know for myself which is best for me.
As far as bone breaking/shattering...I've never had a bone nut break either on the guitar or while I was cutting it and working on it. You'd have to be a real klutz to break one.
I think I'm gonna need more nut sauce.
