Boogie MkIIB

Raging BB Gunologist
I'm looking at getting a MkIIB 60w 1x12 combo w/200w EV speaker.

What are some things you like about these amps?

Dislike?

Known problems?

Thoughts about the clean, rhythm, or lead tones?

I'm looking to use it for small gigs and practice/jamming where using a 4x12 and 200w stereo rackmount is either overkill or is simply a pain in the ass.

How does it respond to OD pedals and rolling off the volume?

Does it work well with modulation effects (ie, chorus, phase & vibe)?

Sorry 'bout all the questions, but I can't crack the amp in the store, and I only want to take it home for a wide open throttle playtest after I know enough about it that I'm sure it'll be worth my time (and the store owners time).

Here's a pic taken in the store;

Re: Boogie MkIIB

Carlos Santana uses a Mesa Mark II. He gets great lead tones with his PRS. But I think he has a "shift" mod done to it or something. The cleans are pretty good and the rhythems are nice, not overkill distortion.

Re: Boogie MkIIB

Those weigh a lot with the EV. I love the cleans and the smooth lead sounds, but they don't seem to do the slightly overdriven rythm tone very well without some type of overdrive pedal, to add some bite to the crunch.

Re: Boogie MkIIB

Unless I miss my guess those have the loop that you can control the volume of the preamp going into the power stage, here this might help ...

and this ... http://home.earthlink.net/~ayan/history.htm ...
I know that the reverbs on alot of the earlier one's use smaller tanks, not very deep if that's your thing, and some of the loops alter your tone. I'd leave the EV personally though, as they are great in those, yeah the whole mKII series is kinda clean or lead ... so I'd have to agree about the crunchy light break up stuff ... that was the whole reason behind the MK IIIs. One of those links covers the difference technically and sonically between the MK II, IIB, IIB+, and IIC. Hope it helps.

Re: Boogie MkIIB

Actually Santana doesn't use Mark II, he uses a Mark I, that he had since the 70's. The Mark I is used with very very little effects (Santana uses a WhaWha, and a tube screamer and relies on his fingers, guitar and amps to get the tone)
(He also uses a dumble now) I have a Mark I reissue and I absolutely love it.
you are talking about the Rolls Royce of amps. The sounds is so rich, cream and warm.
If you play metal or heavy stuff, then don't get the Mark series rather a dual rectifier or a Marshal.

Re: Boogie MkIIB

I love the mk11b at guitar center. It's been there for sooo long. I just need like $700 more bucks to pick it up!!!
