Boost for an 800

Re: Boost for an 800

The funny thing is, the OD pedals that seem to sound best with 800's are my least expensive overdrives.....MXR Classic OD in either green or cream. They even work better than my $350 TS808HW and $2500 Klon Centaur! LOL I got the MXR's as GC doorbusters for $30 each.
They're the same pedal as the MXR GT-OD.

My head is spinning from all the choices. I might just get the head modded:/ I'll try the cheaper ones, for sure. I'm not opposed to inexpensive or off brand stuff, as long as it's reliable. I'm hard on gear.

I have a green one AND a cream one on my board.

Re: Boost for an 800

I was thinking that too. I've been checking out the Waza Craft Overdrives, and I haven't even considered the Rat. I liked that pedal.

I'll 2nd the SD-1 great pedal! I don't get the Wazacraft version though, the stock SD-1 is less than $50, or you can pay $150 for wazoo version??? I know it has a switch, but I'm guessing that just switches a capacitor or RC circuit somewhere for a little more gain/slight voicing change. You can get a stock one and have it modded and still be under $100... FTR, I'm modded my old SD-1 a lot, and ended up changing a lot of it back to stock, it's pretty good in it's stock form. Also, the old MIJ ones and the new MIT ones are the same circuit, unlike the DS-1 that it totally different.

Re: Boost for an 800

BOSS Super Overdrive with the Drive down and the Level up works well. BK Butler TubeDriver is also a good one, and can be bought straight from BK Butler hisself. You can get the Bias mod for a few bucks extra, to tweak the tube's response. His Ebay page has the typical endorsements from Eric Johnson and David Gilmour, of course, but you can gloss over those. And the ones from Joe Bonamassa.

They're a bit pricey, but they're hand-built, and built by BK Butler, not his flunkies or The People's Footpedal Factory #7. Metal housing and all that good jazz. Plus it's a real 12ax7, which you can swap for an AY or AT or some such.

If you're going for the BOSS GE-7 (or any EQ pedal, really) I'd say splurge on a new one, as the used market is kinda high, and people don't generally let one go unless it's defective and they don't tell you this (as was the case with my GE-7 - it's been a bit twitchy since I got it).

I've run all those through my 100w JCM800 head and Carvin 2x12, and any one of those will get you a good, useable level of distortion, unless you're doing the deep dark jigga-jugga-wuggas. For that, you might want a Big Muff Pi and turn the Mids down to about 8 o clock.

Re: Boost for an 800

For an '80s amp, use an '80s pedal to boost it. My favorites (in descending order):

  • Boss GE-7
  • Boss SD-1
  • ProCo Rat

All are plentiful on the used market. Try them before you jump down that expensive booteek rabbit hole.

Cannot believe that the thread got to post 14 before someone mentioned the tried-and-true SD-1

Re: Boost for an 800

So I got a Fulltone OCD from guitar center. It's great, and I have 45 days to return it. I really like the pedal. It's much more transparent than I anticipated. I was seriously considering the SD-1, but the OCD might stay. If I come across an SD-1, I'll check it out for sure. Still considering a mod, however the guy I go to want to put el-34s in it, and I like the kt88.
