Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

I don't know about them OD/Boost/Distortion pedal things, but I tried a Route 66 for fun once...

I heard a Boss MetalCore fronting a spanky-clean Fender the other day and I about feinted - twas pure metal

might be the schniz with an 800

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

Since the OD will be a big part of your signature sound, get a good one. Have you tried any of the T. Rex pedals? Or maybe RID can hook you up, since he'll know what to put in front of your JCM 800.

I just suggested T. Rex because of where you live, and because they're some of the best boutique pedals out there. I haven't tried the Michael Angelo signature pedal, but you might try something like that.

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

Time to be a broken record again. But John Spina mod to TS9 will nail all those tones, not a TS9 stok, John Spina TS9, two pretty different TS9. I can dial in all of those tones with my laney AOR and spina TS9. You also need those G12T-75s in your cab. Dont forget that some of those tones are also very cool 80s analog choruses and delays, so you would need to find some of those.

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

A Box of Rock would totally Rock.. Have you seen the video where they crank the JCM 800 all the way and record it. Then simulate that exact sound with the box of rock? Its a sweet pedal.

Hehe I dont like any T.Rexes I have tried unfortunately, and Rid will not give me a answer on what he thinks would be suitable :( But thanks Joe :)

Box Of Rock is still interesting, Smilemon. I need to hear it IRL though as I am afraid its too JTM45ish and not enough 2203ish.

Dr.Mavashi. What about a Keeley modded TS-9? Would it do the same thing?

Btw. I called a shop here, and one of them has a used black label Boss OD-1 laying around.. Would that be of interest infront of this amp?

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

AXL
Keeley is another 80s standard, but I dont know anything about them. I've just got John Spina's TS9 and never looked back. I play euro power metal, but I dont go for the typical tone associated with this style. My tone is now more along the lines Helloween, Savatage, Accept. My Spina Screamer is on all the time. I can guarantee you, that trebly Pretty Maids tone Spina Screamer will nail.

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

Cool mate... But I just got off the phone with a local place, and ordered a black label 1980 DS-1 with the old style thumbscrew, and a OD-1 from 1979 with black label and old style thumbscrew.

I think they will be great :)

But thanks bro :)

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

You BASTARD!!!! You scored a 1979 OD-1??? UGHH!! I hate you! :grumble:

:)

The OD-1 in front of the 2203 will be THE sound. The only reason I didn't mention it before is because, well, they're not made and they usually cost insane money to get now. That's one pedal you won't have to mod at all.

The DS-1 hasn't really changed much over the years. Different opamps, R39 is there now. Otherwise, same circuit.

Hehe it did cost me 230 bucks.

The DS-1 cost me 110bucks, so I got them both.

If I can get a camera, I might do a full rig demonstration, so people can hear the OD-1 and the pedals etc :)

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

The usual problem with tube amps is the amp not being driven hard enough, mainly because of the horrendous volume level. In the good ol' days the amps had an isolated room where they could be driven to the max. Nowadays we have a lot cheaper and neater options(attenuator/powerscale, latter actually delivering what it promises).

By the way, the pretty maids' overdrive sound sounds a *lot* like jmp non mastevolume amp highly overdriven!

They used JCM800 2203s.. I heard a rumor, about my excact JCM800 being used on one of their records.

Re: Boost for me Marshall JCM800?

I've found that alot of times, when you need a pedal to BOOST an amp like this into high gain, its the pedals that sound sh*tty by themselves, that often mesh the best with the amp's gain, and vice versa. Some of the pedals I LOVE into a dead clean amp, they sound too mushy as boosters.

I'd agree with this. MXR D+ is a PERFECT example. DS-1 is another. I hate both by themselves, but into a 800 or JMP they really sound good.

One of the best "hotrodded" 800 tones I ever heard was a local guy who goosed his 2203 (6550s) with a Boss Heavy Metal pedal. I don't remember his exact settings but the pedal was doing roughly half the work. He was kind of a Randy clone to look at (poofy dirty blonde-do and played a white les paul custom) but he had some incredible tone and chops.

BOSS OD/SOD are nice albeit pretty smooth. Classic Jake E. Lee is an OD-1.

Yup I know. Thats why I bought it, I love Jake E. Lee. One of the best guitarplayers from the 80s. And his tone on Bark At The Moon aint excactly smooth in my opinion :)

There's no way I'd pay that for an OD-1. Same for the DS-1. Sheesh, that's higher than the list price here. Ouchie!

My plan is to take a SD-1 and mod it to OD-1 specs. It'll be of the later OD-1 though, the one with the 8-pin opamp rather than the 14-pin but a couple other changes can make an 8-pin model sound really close to a 14-pin model.

I know, but the OD-1 is in near mint condition, and they are hard to find here. And its from a shop = 2 year warranty :) Pretty nice to have on such a old thing.

Dang, that is nice. Over here, when it's used it is "as-is", no warranty on stuff like that. Bigger items, you might get 10 days or 30 days, depending on the item.
