hey does anybody here use a boost pedal to increase the gain or add
extra oomph to their modeling/solid state amps?
which is good for this application?
i know you suppose to use a boost with tube amps but is it good for
solid state/modeling amps too?
thanx

It might depend on the amp - but I can tell that it would be a disaster for a Line 6 Spider - at least that was my experience.

in my experience regular analog or digital pedals don't work too well with solida state or modelers, most of the time it will result in a pretty weak tone that won't really please anyone. You might try a tube based pedal like a rocktron silver dragon or one of the vox cooltrons. They are more expensive, but they'll have the extra warmth you'll need using a solid state/modeler.

(This is for solid state amps, not modellers but I don't see why it wouldn't work for modellers) If you're going to use one, it's been my experience that the best way to do it is make sure that your guitar output level is low. Use single coils, or turn the volume down on your guitar a bit. Then set the pedal to be just on the borderline of crunch so that when you play a chord there's some distortion, but single note lines don't crackle. Adjust the volume of the pedal to be just a little louder than that of your guitar playing alone. Make sure that your amp is on its distortion channel, but with the gain set very low (so that it sounds almost clean). If you do this you should be able to get a nice thicker lead sound by kicking on the pedal and a nice clean sound by kicking it off . . .

You got a modelling amp and you still feel like you need OD pedals? Man that sucks.

If my amp was solidstate i would get a tube pedal. Tubes really make the guitar sound 'real' and alive to me...solidstate amps just sound like computers to me.

It doesn't JUST increase gain :) I almost always have the SD1 on when playing through the POD. It brings out a tighter, more harmonics rich sound that's more pleasing to the ears in general, to me at least. And I just bought a Digitech Bad Monkey to us as another boost or an OD.
