Boost pedal vs gain knob

With an SFX-01 between guitar an amp, what is the difference between turning the gain up on the pedal and turning the gain up on the amp? Using some of the pedal's gain seems to tighten up the sound whereas turning the gain knob up just adds fuzz.

The way I think about it is this way, gain on any OD/Dist pedal is just a Volue X and gain on the amp(pre-amp) is the "to the power off" depending on the amp. For example with an Engle it would be X^100 :naughty:

It matters what the gain knob affects. Dependent on amp design and where it is in the circuit. I don't know much about the theory but i think there is something on www.amptone.com.
