The Boss GT-8 multi fx is $900, the GT-8 Pro Rack is $1600 (with no footswitch for selecting channels)

Both units have the same 'guts'. The only realy difference is the GT Pro has more rear connections that I'll never use.

Why would anybody spend $1800 on the rack, and a further $300 on the midi floorboard, when they can get both in the one package for $900?

Re: Boss Amp Modellers

Because sometimes you don't want another thing on the floor...

That sort of product seems aimed at someone who already has a rack and probably already has a MIDI setup. If you have an existing rig then for the sake of convenience you'd probably want to just be able to integrate it into the existing set up.

I know the Pod Pro's had a SPDIF out of them, but that was about all they had over the kidney bean models. They were sold on the appeal of being rack-mountable.

In my case, I went with the Pro because I had a rack and a midi controller already. Also, it is a lot cheaper here in the US. I like the digital out of the Pro, and the PC editor.
I will say, the 8/Pro is one cool device. Problem is, if you don't really like tweaking tones, you get serious option anxiety with these, as there is just so much there. They even give you the building blocks to model and store any amp in the world, if you want to.

Re: Boss Amp Modellers

The only thing I'd have on the floor is the midi foor controller for the GT-Pro or the GT-8 Multi fx, so really, no real point in spending the extra money for the rack mount?

Re: Boss Amp Modellers

no, no point, unless you plan on controlling other rackmount gear too, and/or you need the extra outs that the GT-Pro provides...inside, the 8 and Pro are exactly the same.

Re: Boss Amp Modellers

I think the PRO came out before the GT-8 IIRC, and at that stage there was alot of difference between it and the GT-6 floor model...eg DUAL preamps. Maybe this was why the PRO had the high pricetag?

Where are you coming up with a price point of $900?

The GT-8 is $445 USD and the GT-PRO is $699 on Musiciansfriend.com and many places out here, which even in Australian dollars comes out to 589 AUD for the GT-8 and 927 AUD for the GT-PRO (I'm not talking about list price, if that is what you are quoting).

With the GT-Pro you have up to 15 simultaneous FX blocks, which is only a couple more, I think Skarekrough nailed it, it's probably better for a pre-existing set-up, especially for those guys who use those midi pedal boards.

I have a GT-6, and I love it, it does everything I need. I think for a lot of people these self-contained pedal boards are more suitable, and I'm pretty sure they are easier to use.

Where are you getting those Australian Prices from? I just saw a brand new GT-8 for $700 in ebay.

Re: Boss Amp Modellers

Yikes, nevermind. those are US prices on the US website converted over to Australian Dollars. Even after the conversion, you guys are still $109 AUD ($83 USD) more.

Re: Boss Amp Modellers

GT-8's over here is at around $800-$900AUD in stores...but what gets me is the same shops are still trying to sell the GT-6 at around $1200AUD?!? wtf?!

The GT-8 you spotted for $700 AUD on ebay may be new, but you are buying from someone who has imported them from somewhere... they are not a dealer and you don't get your warranty.

Re: Boss Amp Modellers

If it works out after taxes custom, and shipping fees, it's probably best to buy it from an Authorized Dealer in the US that ships worldwide.

For bigger items, it never really works out. For small things such as pickups, tubes and single pedals it's totally worth it. Hard to say if a GT series pedal fits into the big or small category. Being on the other side of the world certainly doesn't make things easy.

I don't think that's the only difference GT-8 versus GT-PRO, but I'd have to do the research. Honestly, for the extra inputs and outputs and the MIDI capabilities, it's worth it, but that's just my opinion.

However, I despise amp modelling :D

Yeah, that is the only difference. They have the same guts, although the Pro has more connections, and has a PC Editor. SOmeone has already written a freeware editor for the 8, so that isn't as big of an issue (all devices that need to be programed should have PC editors!!). The midi capabilities are the same in both.

Roland intends to sell more 8s than Pros, and people who buy Pros already invested in a rack system, so Roland figures they have more money (silly, but true). Pros are almost never in stock at stores, and they have to to order them as people ask for them. This accounts for the difference in price.
