Boss CE-1 vs CE-5

How would you compare the Boss CE-1 Chorus ensample vs the now model CE-5?

How similar they are? I've read good things about the CE-1. How about the CE-5?

There is a mod setting on the POD XT Live called Analog Square which I ****ing LOVE. They say that is based on the CE-1. So I'm thinking of the CE-5 which is released now.

So anyone ever tried it? Or both?

The thing is...FX circuits usually only need to be simple in order to do what they're intended to do with complete purity. When they think like engineers and not musicians, they tend to over complicate circuits.

The more they try to pack into a circuit, the less purity there is in the signal. And this is why most amp and FX aficionados prefer the simple original version, and rarely the complex version.

Boss pedals are a good example of this.

Funny that he found the most complicated way of saying that less complex things are better.

I wouldn't say that the CE5 is a POS, but it's true that it sounds nothing like a CE1.

I have a CE3 and a CE5 and both are totally different. The CE5 tends to be clearer sounding, not quite as extreme and the CE3 seems to be a thicker, more 'old fashioned' Chorus sound.

I owned a CE-5 for ages . . . for what I wanted (a thick, liquid sound . . . and occasionally a slow deep sweep) it doesn't sound all that awesome. It was either not present enough, too bright, or too mechanical sounding. There are very very few pedals that I've not been able to gel with or get ANY usable sounds out of, but the CE-5 is one of them.

Oh I see.

I really love the way that "Analog Square" FX in the POD adds a hollow low mid honk to the sound. Not too much though. Just as needed to make the sound deeeeep. A cool one.

I picked up an old Arion SCH-1 chorus that I really like. It does a really good job of getting the 80's analog chorus guitar tone, and can also do some interesting stuff that borders on leslie/rotary speaker tones as well.

They come up on TGP pretty often - I just saw one there for $60. They take a 9v battery, or any Boss style 9v negative center power supply.

I love my CE-5. I've played through all kinds of chorus pedals and this one suits me the best. I don't like overwhelming effects and the Ensemble gives me a more transparent tone for soloing and has an almost "harmonizer" sort of effect when the level and depth is rolled off. The EQ setting is neat too. For heavy tones, being able to bump the bass in the chorus modulation makes a big difference.

I wish I could contrast it with the CE-1, but I've yet to try it. The CH-1 Super Chorus I have tried and it's great, but a little to blobby and intense for my style.
