Boss DS-1 Distortion vs. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

Re: Boss DS-1 Distortion vs. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

2 completely different sounding pedals... The DS1 has more a British Marshall like sound to it... Fuzzy, raspy,.... it is quite a mid rangey EQ so it does not have a lot of low end to add to the over all sound.. it works great thru amps that have a fair bit of low end tone to begin with... some love them some hate them.... it really does depend on the amp.... for $30-$60 they cost new and used they work extremely well... i use my DS1's thru my Classic 30 and Classic 50's Clean Channels for a modern stack like sound... it works fine thru those amps...

The OD-1 has a more natural cranked cleanish Fender OD to it.... it sounds good thru some amps as a Solo booster.... i like them sometimes with SS amps to add some more Fender tube like OD sounds thru the clean channels..

Re: Boss DS-1 Distortion vs. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

thanks but I wanted the DS-1 compared to the SD-1 not the OD-1

sorry it was just a typing fault brain fart.... everything i said stands on the SD1... i have a few SD1's.... i never cared for them as a solo booster myself but some people love it... i do like to use it thru a clean channel of amps to add some light OD... It has no where near the gain and fuzz of a DS1

The SD-1 is an assymetrical clipping(as opposed to symetrical for the TS-808) effect de-evolved from and based upon the OD-1. So Basically its an OD-1,with some changes;it just doesnt sound as good, so the comments are still relevant to a dregree, even though he probably meant SD-1 anyhow.

Re: Boss DS-1 Distortion vs. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

To me, the DS-1 has a more artificial, fuzzy distortion, whereas the SD-1 is a more natural overdrive. Stock, the SD-1 has a very muted sound (the "blanket over the speaker" sound) and a pronounced mid-hump. The SD-1 is more dynamic that the DS-1, the DS doesn't really translate your picking dynamics very well.

The asymmetrical clipping circuit makes it a little more nasty than the symmetrical Tube Screamer.

I have modded versions of both pedals on my board right now. A few simple mods really improve the SD-1, taking off the blanket, improving its tonal range. The DS-1 also benefits from mods, I find it unusable stock, but pretty good modded; though it still has that fizzy artificial top end.

Re: Boss DS-1 Distortion vs. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

I agree with Rich, I have an old SD-1, a couple of mods and it is really sweet. I didn't find it unuseable stock, but it's much better now. The mod that does the most to remove the "blanket over the speaker" thing is just to remove C6, don't know why Boss hasn't figured this out yet, it would save them about $0.01 per unit.
