Boss DS-1 with keeley mod

I need a good solid sort of high gain distortion pedal. I have a Metal Zone but i think that it just isn't cutting it. I was looking at the Keeley modified ds-1 and i read that Vai and Satriani both use it and that was sort of the sound i was looking for. Any thoughts?:bowdown:

Robert's SEM I never liked,too buzzy sounding,but his Ultra mod I do like...Keeley is a nice guy also and that's always a plus! :laugh2:

Not sure which mods Vai and Satch have,but you could call Robert and ask.

The Keeley modded DS-1 could be what you're looking for. I know it's designed to beef up single coil guitars. I have one, but use it less now that I have a new amp. It does hi-gain well and, imo sounds better overall compared to the Metal Zone.

Also, you might consider sending in your Metal Zone to be modded.

Not to be a spammer but if your interested in a trade or sale, i have a keeley ultra mod i'd like to unload

I used mine for a while as my main distortion. I ran it through the clean channel of my old sovtek mig 60 and it was perfect. Very versatile honestly

Bought a mesa and have no use for it.. PM me if your interested!

Thanks for the offer, but i actually have a stock ds-1 sitting around and i was wondering if the ultra mod would make it sound killer. By the way, does anyone know how the metal zone mod is?

Robert's SEM I never liked,too buzzy sounding,but his Ultra mod I do like...

+1, the seeing eye mod I never much cared for, but the ultra mod is pretty sick. I used one of those as my main distortion box for a while in front of a JCM800.

As far as the metal zone mod goes, I've never heard it myself, but I've heard that it's more along the lines of a "mesa/boogie" than the DS-1 ultra, which is very "Marshall". They got a couple of clips of the metal zone mod on the site.

The metal zone is somewhat of a strange beast. When i started this thread, it sounded horrible, but the other day it sounded pretty good. I'd still like to try the ultra though. I think that it might be a good match to the metal zone as far as a little less gain. I also like that the metal zone mod is more like a mesa and the modded ds-1 is like a marshall because i like both of those sounds. Heck, maybe i'll get them both.

Update: Well, i decided to order a stock ds-1 to see how it sounded. For a $40 pedal it sounded pretty good, but i definately wanted something better so i sent it off to keeley. Should be here in a couple of days. I can't wait.

Update: Wow!! Keeley send it back to me in under a week. No wonder he has such a good reputaion. And oh my god does it sound killer, especially in the ultra mode. I'm thinking about getting rid of my metal zone because i have no use for it any more. I used it on a gig the other night and i loved it. Usually ill use the mt-2 for some the higher gain stuff, but i never turned it on; the Keeley was just too good. Now the search for a good solo boost.

Word to the dizzome on the ultra mod. That pedal was a revelation for me. My ears were open, and finally I liked the tone that was comin out of my speakers.
