So far I like the pv Panama with the 1960 T75 cab. The 160 microphone. It's a perfect 5150 through a 1960 cab cab sound.. I like that IR you linked. I also downloaded own hammers free pack and those 'FRED' IRs all sound great. With IRs I'm supposed to be running just the preamp model in front of them right? Not the amp model? The levels (volume) are really unpredictable from preamp to preamp. I guess thats realistic...

No, you use the amp model, not just the preamp. The IR models the cab + mic, exactly like the cab blocks in the Helix.

No, you use the amp model, not just the preamp. The IR models the cab + mic, exactly like the cab blocks in the Helix.

Oh Ok. Thanks. I thought when an IR was created an amp had to be used, therefore the power section of the amp is sort of 'baked into the sound'

Found this on a message board. "[FONT=Roboto, Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]All IR's are technically "baked" with an AMP.. Something has to drive the sweep signal through the speaker." - However, they still generally recommend what you did, using a helix amp model and not preamp for best sound.[/FONT]

They're baked WITH an amp because there needs to be something driving the speakers

The amp itself is usually a neutral power amp used only to drive air through the speakers

Not a fan of 80s sounds unless its thrash but I'll check em out. BTW I went ahead and bought the 'Ownhammer' Heavy Hitters IR collection... Only tried a few they sound killer. I love the Beyer 160 ribbon mic. So thick and luscious.
