BOSS GT-8 Questions

I'm thinking i might get one of these soon depending on whether it can do what i want it too or not.
I'd be running it from a Peavey JSX and i'm wondering whether it would colour my amps tone alot or not with the amp models on the GT-8, and would i be able to turn the amp models off and just use it for it's effects?
Also what i'm wondering is if there is a way to change between my amps 3 channels using the GT-8 and have certain effects set to each channel so i wouldnt be tap dancing.. or would i have to buy a MIDI pedal to do this?

anyways, i believe boss has the patent on true bypass, but i also know that just about any multi fx unit colors your tone, makes it sound real digital

but i don't have personal expirience with it so i'll let someone else chime in & confirm or disconfirm

no.. the reason i asked if i could turn off the amp models and just use the effects if because i want my amps sound but i also could really use reverb chorus and delay..

You can use the GT-8 as a dedicated FX box and it does an excellent job as one. As far as having presets for each of your amp's channels, you can also do that, but you can't control them from your amp's footswitch. This means you'll either have to do some dancing, or get a MIDI pedal (and still do a bit of tap practice :) ).

damn..

with a MIDI pedal wouldnt i only have to press one button to lets say switch to my clean channel with chorus and delay

yeah, you can not use the amp models- I have the GT-Pro, and I have to say, the reason people buy these things (and why they are expensive) is the amp models and the control you have over them. Otherwise, just get a Boss VF-1, and a midi pedal- a lot cheaper. As far as it sounding digital, I don't hear it. The amp models and effects are some of the best currently available.

hmm.. so with a great sounding tube amp would it be smart to throw these amp models over it?

no actually, the amp models were designed to go into a clean (SS, full range) power source, not really in front of a tube amp. I think you end up spending a lot of money on something that wasn't really designed for your application. If you just want effects, check out the G Force/G Major- but the Boss GT series is mostly designed for direct to the PA or direct recording.

hmm..
alright, well i was just hoping for the BOSS GT-8 to be capable of having presets for my amp channels without a MIDI pedal and such..

any other recomendations for an effects only unit? i mainly need chorus reverb and delay and wanna keep it a rather low price range while still having great quality sound. I cant find this BOSS VF-1 anywhere and right now im leaning towards the G major but im just wondering of any other decent products to take a look at.

well, the GT series does allow you to control amp channel switching depending on the type of jack your amp uses to switch channels. You can also reconfigure effects in any order with the stomp of a switch. What effects are you actually looking for?

so wait.. are you saying that i CAN preset effects to each of my amps channels and switch them using the GT-8? what kind of jack does the amp have to use?

and the main effects im looking for are delay, reverb, and chorus

I used to use a GT-6 for effects and it worked quite well. I think the GT-8 has a switching jack that you can switch amp channels with, but I don't know if it can do a 3 channel amp.

on the interactive video for the GT-8 it says theres an, and i quote, "amp control button that can switch channels on your amplifier at the same time you switch patches"

what kind of jack does the amp use to connect to its footswitch? you can also download the GT8 manual to see what it can do at roland.com.

damn.. i just found out that cable wont work with my amp.. thats a total piss off for me.

i need more recommendations on effects processors.

Some people in this thread keep speaking of MIDI-pedals, but you're all forgetting the GT-8 does a fine job serving as a MIDI-pedal in itself! The GT-8 is fully MIDI-capable, so you're not at all limited to the channel switching jack.
So if your JSX is MIDI-switchable, you can easily setup the GT-8 so that it switches channels on your amp with each patch change - or even within a patch if you want it to. No problemo :)
