The Metal Zone, in my opinion, is the best distortion pedal around. From what I remember of the Boss Heavy Metal and the quick try I did of the Hyper Metal they're both very trebly and harsh sounding. It's been a while though since I heard it.

Revolver.

I haven't tried an actual Hyper Metal, but the model of it on my Boss Drive Zone is very mid boosted and ear-piercing. Definitely not the best distortion, in my opinion. I used to have a Metal Zone and I hated that too, but if I had to pick, I'd have to say Metal Zone.

With the right mods a MT-2 can sound very killer! Most people hate the MT-2 because of the shrill mids you get when improperly adjusted. Check out my sig for soundclips of the mt-2. Not the heaviest distortion but I'm working on a heavier clip already. I did a little mod on the pedal myself btw.
You might want to check out the red boss distortion. (not shure how it is called exactly) but the MT-2 has more eq control knobs so I'd go for that one.
I think a Keeley modded MT-2 would be the ultimate distortion pedal.

I've owned a MT-2 metal zone (as you can see below) for about 4 of my 5 or so years of guitar playing. I'm also extremely anal when it comes to tone, so that means I did a LOT of research before I bought it. When I did I had tried out many other distortion pedals, and none of them could even hold a MATCH to the metal zone. Also just recently I thought about buying a new distortion pedal, and went to Steve's Music and Long and McQuade in Toronto to check out the selection. Through experimenting all on my own, I discovered that the Metal Zone beat down a Dunlop Dime Distortion, a Digitech Metal Master, an Ibanez Tube Screamer, and a few other pedals, including Boss Hyper Metal AND Mega Distortion (the red one already mentioned). So basically, stick with ur metal zone, not only for the tonal versatility offered by the fully adjustable EQ, but just because its a much better pedal, in my opinion:6:

Hey, mr metal man, I have the same rig as you have! Those Randalls can kill!!! How's your setup treating you?

pretty super duper, Nightburst:D but I've got a question for YOU.... do u have any examples for settings I could use for the gain 2 channel? I go with bass 8 mid 2 (contour 2) treb 10 but im not COMPLETELY satisfied..

Heh, seems to be a love/hate relationship with the Metal-Zone. I've never tried it with mods, though.

Ever tried the ProCo Rat or Rat ll or even the Turbo Rat, cool boxes.
