Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal

I originally bought this pedal several years ago because I had heard the Daniel Johns of Silverchair used one on Freak so I bought it. Well the thing sucked and sounded bad through everything I put it through. So I put it in a box and forgot all about it. So about a year agp (almost 2 now I guess) I started working on a computer set up and I had a nice small vintage Fender amp I found the pedal, plugged it in and it still sucked. So it got shelved. Well I would try it now and again each time it sucked. Today I decided I would try it one more time before it hit ebay. This time I through an eq behind it and plugged it straight into the computer, no computer modellers, no amps, no mics, nothing, and it actually sounded good. Well not like OMG I need new change of pants, but it was one of the sounds I was looking for. It needs a little more work, but its getting close. I was really after that metallic/processed 80's metal sound and this thing so does it and well too! I was amazed. I would't call that sound great, but its one I really like. So thank you Boss for making a pedal no one used. It just needs some eq tweeking and a speaker sim to round the sound out a bit maybe.

The only example I can think of at the moment of what it sounds like check out Judas Priest on VH1 rock honors. It reminds me of that. Or maybe the painkillers tones.

I'm Eric and I love crappy pedals that make crappy sounds.

Gah, damnit. :smack:

More money I'll end up having to waste.

Interesting story! I think the problem with most pedal distortions is that they're harsh, and sometimes all it needs is an EQ to clean up that sound and make it smoother or just better to the player. Especially cool that you found a sound you liked after all that time. Clips?

Ill get some up sometime. Def when I get this new song done. But I'm waiting on a Hughes and Kettner Redbox. I don't want to put up anything to premature.

Re: Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal

What, posting how good it sounds with your computer and not posting clips ?
HOW DARE YOU ! :D

Looks like it wouldn't be too hard to record something. So how 'bout posting just a couple of Priest riffs ?

Mind you, my friends and I really dug the Heavy Metal, Hyper Metal and later on the Metal zone as well back in the day when we began playing heavier stuff. Slamming our Valvestates with them and putting it to tape.

Thank you for sharing ! :)
I'm at work now, no sound .. I'll be looking forward to listening when I get home.

Re: Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal

have you tried it with a speaker sim? that would probably really make it sound good going direct into the computer!

I'm still waiting on it to get here!

That clip is nice. The tone sounds softer than I would expect from any pedal distortion. Was there much gain on that?

The distortion was at 12 'clock and the Bass and Treb controls were on full. I did a mid boost on the eq pedal. The standard hill shape.

I didn't use much distortion because I had a really bad hum going on and I didn't want it to take over the sound. I need to get some new cables.

Thanks for listening!

Re: Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal

I have the same pedal, but I don't use it much. Actually, of all my distortions, overdrives, and fuzzes, I find cool settings with a little patience and sometimes layering of other effects.

Re: Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal

I had one of those laying around for a while.

Put it on my Cube 60 through the clean channel, JC120 model. OUCH! Harsh and sterile.

Then put the Blackface model... WOW! It mellowed out a lot. It made for a smooth, very usable tone. Not exactly for pummeling riffs though. It was better for a cheesy 80s lead tone. Still, it wasn't half bad and I might use it someday for something here and there.
