Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

I ordered a Boss Katana Mini the other day on a whim after watching some reviews and deciding that it would make a handy little amp to use out on the road.

Well, all the demos made it sound much, much better than really does. I suspected that it would be the case, but I went ahead and rolled the dice. It sounds a cheap boxy sounding POS battery powered amp. Basically like a warmed over Fender Mini Twin or one of those little Marshall half stacks you can hold in your hand.

99% sure I'm sending it back, if the return policy isn't a hassle.

Re: Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

I bet they played it direct for the recording or into a larger cab.

Little speaker almost always = little sound.

Re: Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

I'll keep that in mind if I get that particular hair up my ass again. But like I said, I bought the Katana Mini on a whim, so I don't intend to replace it.

Re: Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

Isn't Boss and Roland the same company

I was 7nder the impression the Katana was meant to supplant the Cube

Re: Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

^Yeah Roland is the main company, Boss is a division under them or something like that (I have no MBA skills lol)

The microcube had surprised me when I first heard it, it sounded so much better than my crappy old laney ss practice amp.

I much like the yamaha thr series for practice amps. Those also sound good via phones.

Re: Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

The Katana Mini is a toy. No sense in wasting coin on a Katana 50 either, to be honest.

Micro amp = Roland MicroCube

Larger (but very portable) combo = Boss Katana 100 1x12"

Best of both worlds = the Katana Head, which has a built-in 30W 5" speaker that sounds pretty darn good for what it is, all the features you can ask for and enough power to blow the roof off decent size venues, yet practice with a baby in the other room thanks to 3 levels of power switching (1W, 50W, 100W) ;)

Re: Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

Haven't been too impressed with the Katana's

You played the 50W and found it bright and stiff like many do...exactly why no one should buy anything less than the 100 combo with its slightly bigger enclosure, better speaker and presence knob ;)

Re: Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

The Roland Cube Lite is a solid alternative as well. The sound is surprisingly good if you're looking for a little travel unit.

Re: Boss Katana Mini.....yuck.

If your looking for a great little amp with lots of clean, a distortion button, gain button and lots of volume that doesn't break up . That comes in a small package with a 3 inch speaker great for practice and travel is the Blackstar Fly3. It is worth trying one I love mine I use it at the campground for playing and practice to say the least this thing is impressive. Don't let size fool you.

Tried a couple out a couple different times. Good overall tone, but the top end sounded muffled to my ears.
