Boss Katana MKll Head

I love that head. It would work great for my cover gig

I've never played one, but it seems like a Katana Head could be used in almost every situation (except for busking without mains power).

The built-in speaker essentially makes it a highly portable combo amp with assloads of power/versatility on tap. Use it for practice and jamming where a proper speaker cab is not required. Sit it on your desktop for recording. Take it to your friends house on a whim.

Want to shake the walls? Plug into your favourite speaker cab. Need to rehearse or play a gig but want to minimise transport weight? Just rock up and plug into the provided enclosures.

The Katana Head also kind of solves the problem of all these micro lunch box amps that weigh nothing but still need a speaker to operate.

One little head blowing two enormous cones at the same time, interesting.

I especially love the metal grille, road tough. You can kick it around, throw beet bottles at it and it's still good for the next gig. I think all amps should use metal grille instead of cloth that turns brittle after a while.

Boss’s own Katana cabinet is a 2x12, with a thoughtful open-or-closed back configuration. I think it uses 16-ohm speakers, as the cab’s nominal rating is 8 ohms.

I thought I would try the Randall as a cab first, as it was easy and inexpensive to convert it, and I already knew I liked the Eminence speakers.
You have the Swamp Thang/Texas Heat combo in the Randall cab, correct?

Ah, yes. Eight-ohm versions, as I had wanted to match the original speakers in that parameter. Of course, I will have to run them in series with the Katana. :laugh2: I liked them a lot when I had the RG1503 in my living room and was using it as a clean pedal platform with every dirt box under the sun. I found it did Fenderish tones surprisingly well, in addition to your Marshalls and high-gain stuff, all with that Swamp Thang/Texas Heat combo, so they seemed like a natural for the Katana.
They're such a clear sounding set of speakers and each speaker's characteristics compliment the other's. I would imagine that they would work great with the Katana head. I've used mine with my Spidervalve head and it sounds fantastic. Though my cab is also front ported.

Yep, thats how I had mine set up.

I liked the amp, but that is the primary reason I sent it back.

OTH, maybe I am being a snob. Having easy access to all the cables is a dream come true. Want?

I would think Bluetooth is where it is going, so you could deep edit on a gig if the front panel doesn't get you the control you want. The head really does seem like a great value.

Here is where it starts getting expensive. None of the Katanas ship with the footswitch. It costs $149.99.

But dont forget your volume and expression pedals. Gonna want a couple of those. $79.99 each.

Dont want cheap plastic ones? Want something rugged and durable? Here you go. $139.99 each.

Yikes. Does the amp have midi? I have a midi footswitch with 2 exp pedals.

There is an unaffiliated third-party app called Katana Librarian that is supposed to open up the field for Android phones and tablets. I have not tried it. It is said to work either through USB OTG or a Bluetooth adapter plugged into the Katana. (The only connectivity the Katana has from the factory is a good old-fashioned USB B jack on the rear panel.)
I'm using the Katana Librarian on a cheap Android tablet, that I'm also using for my partitions. So I have the tablet with me anyway.
I'm putting the tablet on the top of the amp, connected with an OTG cable. I really don't need bluetooth as it's working well that way. Way easier to use a touchscreen than a mouse IMHO. I struggled with the Boss app on my Mac but it is a positive experience for me with Librarian on Android. Highly suggested.

The katana head is based on the boss gt100 modeling and effects.

I have always thought it would be cheaper to buy a katana head and get a used GT100 into the loop than to buy the footswitches.

You have to wonder why plastic exp pedals are so expensive. Line 6 charges about that much, too.

Are the Katana and Waza Air using the same modeling technology? I am still loving the Waza Air for night time practice, I’ve got some ideas brewing for non-headphone practice without firing up a big rig. (The lunchbox head was one, this is another)
