Boss ME-70 multi fx review

ginormous

Understatmentologist
Thanks to the generosity of Larry (Stratman), a forum friend, I got a really cool gift for Christmas last year. There's a wealth of sounds available, and it's not hard to handle.

The case is strong steel, and the rubber feet are stout. Construction is solid; the foot treadle (for the wah/volume/pitch bend effects) has a nice travel and it even accomodates my American size 15 foot.

It's got a preamp section with "tweed", "high-rec" (think recto) and other voicings. The control layout is straightforward, there's gain for days, and the effects are fine examples of Boss pedals.

I installed the batteries, tweaked it a bit, found a compatible power supply (the Boss factory model wasn't available, but I got one with the proper voltage, polarity and amperage for a decent price) and hit some gigs.

I could have gone on for days, exploring the various presets, but for a cover band bar gig I found some out-of-the-box settings that worked well. I'm still getting into how clean this is -- not a blanket muffling my sound, and the noise level (or lack thereof) gives me a reason to smile.

edit: What sells it for me are the wah (I tuned the peak a little higher, and got the Maestro Boomerang 'theme from Shaft' sound I've been looking for) and the univibe sound (a decent clone, without a photocell... amazing!).

I'm diggin' it big time! Just what I needed. Thanks, bro.

Awesome gift! Are you using it for bass and guitar...or just guitar?

Glad it's working for you, Reg. Couldn't have gone to a nicer guy.

Very cool, Boss cranks out some great stuff when they are on their game

Looks very cool. Only 5 models on the preamp?

Kind of like a cross between a Cube and Vox. Lot's more fx tweekability.

I'd be all over that of it had more models. However - those will get you far!

Roland JC 120
Blackface
Bassman
800
5150
and Rectofier....

With lot's of eq. No presence knob flip dangit!

No presence knob flip dangit!
Well, there's a Top Boost setting on the compressor, if that's what you mean. My Ibby semi-hollow is 'present and accounted for' already. It's quite fat-sounding, it doesn't need any help in the low end or midrange.

Re: Boss ME-70 multi fx review

Could you plug this thing straight to the board and get good sounds?

I've tried, and it just never sounds that great to me. But for a dash of FX into an amp, this thing is great.

If I want to go straight into the board, I use my RP-1000 instead.
