Boss Mega Distortion

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

Didn't you just drop a grip on a new Marshall JVM? If that thing's distortion ain't doin it for ya i kinda doubt a Boss distortion pedal will.

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

what's with you guys always bring up crap like that? is it so friggin hard to simply contribute something helpful to the subject matter? who gives a friggin flip whether or not i get a stinking jvm? it doesn't matter. i just want to know about the stinking mega distortion pedal. i don't want to bring my jvm up in this thread. i have more than one amp man. maybe i want a new distortion pedal for one of my other 3 friggin amps. it's like friggin pulling teeth sometimes. dude, your post was completely worthless and a waste of time.

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

what's with you being so defensive and irritable?

you have a thread in the O.T. section about how much money you spend on gear, so i was tryin to save you some time and money by reminding you of how good you've got it.

i hear it's a decent dirt box with lots of low-end. I'll bet your local guitar center's got one, why don't you go try one out?

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

sorry man, i'm having a real rough day at work and i keep getting reponses like this to my threads. you're right. the website does say that it has a particularly punchy bottom end and plenty of it. the soundclips sound good.

the truth is that i'm not getting enough distortion from my el diablo (it's good for rhythm work, but i can't get smooth legatto with it). i want to get a really good natural and warm sounding distortion to use on its clean channel. it has a very very good clean channel, by the way, and great eq/contour/attack controls.

i think putting a nice distortion or heavy overdrive before it will sound great. hte mega distortion sounded pretty cool. i have tried my metal zone and it sounded good, but too metalic. the tone of that amp has a real nice grip to it. kind of a ripping tone that's not metallic at all, so i want something similar to the warm amp distortion.

if you have some pedal suggestions, that would be helpful.

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

Man we've all got problems. Most of us come here to get away from ours -- we don't wanna deal with yours too.

I have a Boss DS-1 modified by Mr. Spina and it's a decent little dirt box for running into a clean amp so maybe you'd dig that. If you like the distortion your El Diablo's got but you want a little more, you'd probably be happier with a clean boost or an overdrive pedal to add a little saturation for leads.

The basic rule of thumb is a "distortion" pedal is designed to simulate an amp that's fully cranked. An "overdrive" is a pedal designed to give a fully cranked amp a kick in the ass, and a clean boost does the same without 'coloring' the tone (like how some people say Tubescreamers have a lot of mids that they find unnecessary...they'd be happier with clean boosts.)

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

He's just trying to get his post count up. In one month he has 300+ posts.

that's probably the most absurd thing i've heard. what's the difference? who cares about a post count? i really don't see how that benefits me, but in your mind i guess it matters. keep it coming though, at least i'm bringing to surface all the annoying people who i only care to avoid in the future. thanks for trolling my thread though

This almost sounds like what I was referring to with the old strings. For rhythm crunch it's awesome. For leads and "shredding" it can get a little lost and flat. Try changing your strings. Seriously, night and day difference especially with this amp. Also maybe play with an EQ like Boss GE-7 to pump up some highs and upper mids. Also the compression and global attack help out a lot. I had really good luck lowering the gain and playing with the contour and attack level settings. There's a lot of hidden tones in those knobs, don't give up on that gain channel just yet. Another thing I noticed was while playing alone it was sometimes tricky to dial in what I was after. But in a live situation that El Diablo really opened up and everything I thought it was lacking was there and was cutting right through the mix.

If worst comes to worst and you really want to overdrive that clean channel I'd look into an overdrive vs distortion. Also I don't know how the stock tubes react but the 6l6's I have start to break up a little in a on the clean channel when cranked. An OD pedal would really enhance that. I've also read a number of reviews saying that the amount of available gain increases with 6l6's. A new set of tubes would be a lot cheaper than a new pedal too.

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

The Boss Mega Distortion is one of my favorites. I have about 25 overdrive and distortion pedals, and this is the one that comes closest to doing it all. It goes well with both solid state amps and with tube amps. It gets just as heavy as the Metal Zone, but it cleans up a lot better, and it stays smooth at every setting. The 2 EQ knobs make it really easy to match with any guitar or amp you are using. I feel it effectively covers the entire spectrum of overdrive, rock distortion, and metal distortion tones.

yeah the compression helps a lot, but i would prefer not to have to use it. i did try to check on that string thing you mentioned. one guitar had very old strings and the other had brand new ones. i didn't notice a difference except that the amp is very particular to pick attack.

it does have enough gain for rhythm work, blues, and maybe rock type stuff, but i need something for soloing which i like to do the most.

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

it is a great distortion box for the cash... but it is really sensitive as to what amp you play it thru... like all pedals i guess... me and a guy i know that works at a local shop tried one thru a Traynor combo and we were shocked at the Mesa Boogie style dirt and lows we were getting out of it... didn't quite get the same effect thru a Classic 30 combo but it was still good...

I bought one of these Mega Distortions for my board a few years ago... i still use my DS1 more often as i like it's grind slightly better but it lacks the lows i get with the Mega Distortion.... the way i use the DS1 is when i'm looking for more Marshall-ish tones and i use the Mega when i'm looking for more Boogie-ish tones... As close as you can get with a pedal of course..

all in all it is a good pedal and worth the $100 or what ever....

as far as overdriven tones i'm sure it can.... it has a gain controll so just cut it back.....

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

I put a pedal board together for a friend of mine. She plays mostly keys, but also plays some guitar, and decided to go all Boss. She got the TU-2, a compressor, phasor, the Super Chorus, and then added a Crybaby Wah.

For distortions, she opted for the Blues Driver and the Metal Zone. I've been using Mesa amps for a number of years, but I was actually impressed with the range of tones these two pedals are capable of. To our ear, the Metal Zone was more musical, and had more range than the Mega Distortion. So my viewpoint totally contradicts Baritone, LOL!

The best advice I can give is to try it with your guitar, your cord, your amp. Certain combinations seem to work better than others.

Good luck!

Bill

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

I had a mega and you could dial it into a lot of tones, personally I think it shines at the boogie sounds but it could be quite versatile with the extra eq's controls.

Honesty I traded mine in because it was a little over the top distortion wise for what I needed.

Re: Boss Mega Distortion

For bumping the distortion on your El Diablo, I would try a SD-1, that will probably push the dirt channel harder and get you what you want for lead. I think the MD would be a little over the top for pushing an already gainy amp.

Just my <$0.02...
