Boss OD-1

Re: Boss OD-1

Played one once upon a time. Liked the OD 3 way better. It's like the "What mod guys would do" version of the OD1.

Never got real attached to the OD-1, since TS9's were plentiful and cheap back in the day.

Hadn't used one in years but so love it and want one. Closest I can get to a real one these days is by modding a SD-1 to OD-1 specs, the dual op-amp version anyway. The quad op-amp version sounds a bit warmer.

Re: Boss OD-1

I have never owned one but have played through one...These pedals are highly collectable and have great tone...Hard to remember tonally about it now though?

Well, they are the granddaddy Overdrive pedals...first pedal ever that's what we think of now as an OD pedal...Ibanez based the TS-808 on the OD-1.

I know they are different than the old 808's in more than a few ways but I'm wondering if I should take the chance I have and grab one...

I tryed finding a decent OD1 YouTube video, but the players suck and so did the recordings... ;o( One video was a side by side comparison of the TS 808 and an OD1 that was tolerable...

Re: Boss OD-1

Crappy Playing but...Maybe you will still hear a tonal difference?

If it's a sweet deal, snag it. If you don't care for it, no doubt you can probably make a profit.

I have a copy of the schematic and compared it to the 808 and SD-1 and noticed quite a few differences.

Re: Boss OD-1

Thanks John...I had actually seen that 808/OD1 clip...there are lots of OD1 clips on UTOOB but most of the sick.

Erik, your OD1 schematic...is it the 8 pin op-amp version of the 14 pin op-amp version??

After doing a lot of reading it looks like a lot more than just the op-amp changed on the OD-1...

I have schematics for both versions. There are quite a bit of changes between the two versions. With the 8-pin version, it's real easy changing a regular everyday SD-1 in to an OD-1. I did it myself a few times. Sat and studied the schematics, noted the differences then plotted out what really needed to be changed. The results were great.

When it changed from 14-pin to 8-pin, the input and output buffers changed to jfet transistors. In the 14-pin version, those buffers utilized sections of the op-amp. So, the other changes are more to do with biasing the transistors for proper performance in the 8-pin version.

Re: Boss OD-1

Christian if you want, send me an SD1 and I will do the OD1 changes to it via Erik's ideas..Merry Christmas...Would save you some money maybe? No charge to do the mods...Paying it forward again..Lol

Re: Boss OD-1

Thanks for all the mod info and thanks to John for the mega cool offer but I'm not really looking for an OD-1...I was offered one as part of a trade and am really just reading up on them in general.

The history part has me interested being that it's really the oldest old school OD pedal but past a historical connection I don't really have a lot of interest at this point...

I might do the trade, we'll see...it's a good deal but not a great deal or anything.

Offer stands for whenever then buddy! You know me well and no catch! ;o)

Very cool Erik....

Thanks, John. I printed out both schematics one night, sat at the kitchen table with them and a highlighter and proceeded to make note of the differences, then made sense of it all. I'm tempted to do it again with the SD-1 I have sitting here.

You're welcome, Christian. I hope it helps answer questions.

At least SD1 s are cheap....I still have a modded DS1 but not an SD1 or I'd check out your OD1 mod for it...I'll keep an eye out for a cheapo SD1..Nice the way alot of us help each other....Always loved that about the forums!
