Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

What are your thoughts on this pedal? My amp has no reverb so I thought I'd run out and buy a reverb pedal and this has got to be one of the worst things I'd ever purchased. No matter how you set this thing it just sucks tone out of ...your tone. Not only that, but the actual reverb effect is just terrible. The reverb does not sound natural at all whatsoever and its works better as some kind of delay/modulation effect, which is not what I need or want.
I figured I was just an idiot and probably just couldn't work it the right way or something, but I talked to a friend about it (who is an accomplished jazz guitarist) and he said he had one and he didn't like it either. Then he told me to try the electro harmonix holy grail reverb that he had and its perfect, when I get the chance I'm gonna pick one up. It 10 times waht the RV-5 is.

Am I the only one that thinks this about the pedal? What are your thoughts?

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

I like the RV-5, but I also like the Holy Grail. The Holy Grail sounds a little more natural, but I am generally not too picky about my reverb effects. On my DigiTech DigiVerb, on any of the 7 modes available, I find it best when I have all the other knobs set at 9 o'clock. I need my reverb sounds to be really subtle.

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

I haven't tried the RV-5 or the Holy Grail, but I am very happy with my Line 6 Verbzilla. Great sounding models, very tweakable, sounds great in front of an amp or in the loop.

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

make sure you put it in the fx loop, it will sound better.

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

I had the RV-5 and hated it also!!!! I gave it plenty of chances and it just sounded too metalic for me. I have a Verbzilla now and am happier. Though nothing can compare to a nice Lexicon Verb!!!

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

I had the Boss and sold it as soon as I got the Line 6 Verbzilla. Get a Verbzilla.

They're the very best reverb pedal I've ever used.

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

I can't believe this got to post 5 before the Verbzilla police chimed in!

I'm still sticking with my Grail. Does the RV-5 also have delay on it these days? I know the old one did....that was kinda cool.

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

The Holy Grail that I tried was exactly what I was looking for so when I get enough cash I'm gonna get one of those.

yeh on the RV-3 but both the delays and reverbs are sub standard on that pedal in my opinion. And that pedal wasn't that cheap (at least in australia).

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

I also have a Verbzilla. Its a very realistic reverb. Its not exactly the same as real spring reverb, but its pretty **** close. If you wanted better than this the Holy Grails name comes up, but if I were going to spend a few hundred dollars on a reverb unit, I would buy a Fender Reverb unit.

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

i do not think reverb pedals are as good as some dedicated reverb racks units.....The difference in sound quality is huge........and the boss rv3 is equally bad as the rv5......The verbzilla though is much better........and i would like to try the new reverb pedal by tc electronics....

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

They just released a new holy grail. It's smaller and has room reverb, which the regular one doesn't. I haven't checked one out yet but if they decided to replace the useless flurb setting with something useable AND make it smaller I might have to buy one.

Re: Boss RV-5 Reverb pedal

Boss discontinued it, but you can find them on Ebay
Or for $500AUD at one of my local music stores which is definately a rip off!
I am looking into getting a new reverb pedal and am hoping the Holy Grail plus is my answer. How does the original holy grail compare to the verbzilla?

The Verbzilla is a better built, better sounding pedal than the Holy Grail.

Hey now - that's a matter of taste on the tone!

There are probably two Zilla settings that should be compared. And there is no Flerb on the Zill! No Flerb in verb is a dealbreaker for me anymore!!!!

Doesn't Dano make a pedal that does the verb can explosion?
