It's a Jim Dunlop Bottleneck...

It's a slide. You press it against the strings, but not hard enough for them to fret, and move it around. It's usually used with an open tuning, such as D, E, A, and G. Check out some Son Seals, Ry Cooder, and Bonnie Raitt to hear how it sounds.

For slide I have two words...Tommy Bolin. Or two more words...George Thorogood

Slide? You want a kick Ass slide player, try Derek Trucks on for size! I have never heard or seen such a soulful slide player as young as Derek. AMAZING!!

Re: Bottleneck? Huh? Wtf do I use that for?

what tunings do you use? i got one the other day and am curious-anybody know them from E to E strings?

Re: Bottleneck? Huh? Wtf do I use that for?

I play slide in a standard tuning, but I know players that use an open E (E-A-E-G#-B-E), open A (E-A-E-A-C#-E), open G (G-B-D-G-B-D/G) and open D (D-A-D-F#-A-D). It's kind of about what works for you.

When a fight breaks out during your gig at the local biker bar, it can be a real hassle to break a beer bottle in half to use as a weapon. The folks at Dunlop realized this, and came up with half a glass bottle, perfect for slicing open someone's face during hand-to-hand combat. :laugh2:

I guess maybe that would've been funnier if I'd posted it before someone told you what it was really for. :blackeye:

I used to have a 210 specifically (it got dropped...glass + concrete doesn't work.)..I'm gonna get another one eventually...right now I'm using a metal one that I made cutting the leg off of an OLD OLD kitchen table I found (old school blues slide method there)

I saw a 10 year old slide guitar player this weekend that blew me away...he was blind too and played like nobody I've ever heard.....played piano too...did Ray Charles and Dr. John stuff...phenom for sure

Re: Bottleneck? Huh? Wtf do I use that for?

i use mine in drop d, i dont usually use the tuning but its a lovely sound with a set of 12s and a high action..

plus, i hate changing the goddamn tunings so often ;)

Most Slide players tune to D or G. Some tune to E and A These 4 tunings are the same, but a whole step apart. The way I have always done it is I use E and A for electric (the strings are lighter), and G and D for Acoustic.

Try this: G tuning: (6) D (5) G (4) D (3) G (2) B (1) D
or This: D tuning: (6) D (5) A (4) D (3) F# (2) A (1) D

If you notice the Triad for a G chord in the G tuning is on strings 1,2 and 3. In the D tuning the Triad is on strings 3 4 and 5. Something else to think about is the action on the guitar. I raise the strings up to a point where I can fret comfortabley, yet the strings are high enough so they don't bounce off the frets. Muting is Essential for good slide playing. You will need to mute the unwanted strings with your right hand as well as mute behind the slide. Some players wear the slide on the pinky, some wear it on the ring, and some wear it on the middle. It really is a matter of experimenting to see what feels comfortable and sounds good. If you really want to learn some good tecnique I would recommend buying Warren Haynes slide videos. They are excellent. Another good option is to find a local player who can teach you the basics. It is a good way to start!
