Bought a EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost.

Re: Bought a EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost.

lol....a nuke. heavy playing makes you feel like a man, and it doesn't have to be fast. There's so many types of metal nowadays. My son knows them better than I, but I have seen a lot of shows his band plays where other bands are hard core acts; not my thing. The music is ok, the thing they call signing, I just don't get it, and that's probably why they do it..lol.

Amazing my wife doesn't complain about it all.....actually she just turns up the salsa and merengue even louder to compensate. Between us and our drummer son, who plays metal, it can be a loud house.

That triple wreck is pricey. I may end up with the metal muff.

Re: Bought a EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost.

Yeah, me too. Played the hyde today and it is heavier than I recall, but these other pedals seem to be heavier. Viewed some you tube demos of the metal muff and triple wreck (just realized I had posted previously as train wreck...lol). I'm leaning towards the triple wreck.

Funny thing is, I really don't play in the metal style seen in demos, as far speed and chords (or lack thereof). I just like the heaviness of the tones, using slower tempos and more melodic chording. Not really sure what I sound like...lol. But I know I prefer perfect circle, tool, etc over typical metal bands. Not sure where I'm going with this....just need a heavier pedal...just because.

All of the youtube demos don't do the Metal Muff justice at all. I bought one with out playing it and while I was waiting for it to get here I checked out the youtube videos and I was not inpressed at all! But to my suprise the Metal Muff sounds waaaaayyy better in person! Someone needs to do a good demo of this pedal.

Re: Bought a EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost.

Given that it's $150 cheaper than the triple wreck, I think I'll give it a shot. If it doesn't work out, I can use the store credit for everything else I've got planned. I could use the difference to squeeze into a foxrox octotron 2 I've been eyeing.

I don't need it to do too much, just one great go-to super heavier tone to add to my aresonal.

In my opinion, most gear with "Metal" on it's name usually has the worst demos on Youtube.

Too many guys going for the full-tilt distorsion, zero-mids sound. Which I hate.

The Metal Muff and all of it's variants, the pocket, nano, micro, regular, and top boost, are fantastic pedals.

Re: Bought a EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost.

After listening to a lot of you tube metal pedal demos, I finally settled on the metal muff, and I'm very happy with it and the price.

While it's pretty much a one trick pony as far it's overall voice, it really does allow of a lot of tonal options, with contols that make dramatic differences, and it just seems more upfront and therefore less like a pedal and not like typical metal pedals that, like the triple wreck, seem too distant sounding to me.

I actually wasn't going for a typical super high gain, screechy metal sound. Instead, I've been trying to find a heavy and clear enough pedal to break through the very thick clean channel of my deville modded into a marshal voice, which seems to swallow up any distortion I run through it, preventing any edge for the pedal getting through. The metal muff gets through (I only set gain at 9:00), and I've ended up with a very cool high gain sound. For leads I can add the jeckyl/TS in front to add more sustain and a slight tonal change.

Now, if I run it through my 6L6 hellhound, it definitely sounds like it's usual self, although that's less of the sound I was after (but still fun to have).

Top boost does nothing for me; just adds a trebly, grainy tone that I don't like much. But I got this version because it has separate bass, mid, treble controls, which I needed.

Lot of gain choices in my setup now, but I still need a low gain OD that doesn't have the TS sound (currently leaning towards ecstasy drive - if its a TS circuit, then my bad, but it doesn't sound like it to me), then I think I'm done rounding out the dirt pedal side of my board....famous last words.

Re: Bought a EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost.

Now that it's been for a while on my pedalboard, I think it's a bit thin on the low mids.
It sort of makes up for that with some insane lows.
I also use a Marshall Jackhammer and that thing punches hard in the low-mids so I'm spoiled.
But then, the Jackhammer doesn't have the clear, brutal highs the TB Muff has.

Still, if you want Triple Rec tone in a budget, it's the way to go!

yes, i hear that too, but only through the hellhound, which has a fender type voice. the deville is very thick and full of mids, so its a perfect match and the result really isn't the usual metal muff sound; instead it's more driven by the deville's clean channel voice, with the muff providing edginess and soem of that triple rec type tone.

very pleased

I really like 'em !
It says Metal Muff, but at lower gain settings it give you a killer Hard Rock tone !

Yes, I agree. I'm running at pretty low gain, around 9:00: is that considered low for this pedal? It's the only setting I found that had enough gain to return a full and heavy enough sound but so much as to put me in hard core metal land with no dynamics, etc. My bass and mids are close to 12:00; any deviaton from that makes serious tonal changes. My setup already has tons of mids, so I can only see scooping if I ever need it. Thankfully the bass gives meaningful adjustments, due to my bass heavy setup.

Re: Bought a EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost.

I use a similar amount of gain than you guys. Just enough that it squishes the signal a tiny bit. That's the best sound with this pedal.

YUP, 9:00 is exactly what i am referring too !

Re: Bought a EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost.

i used to love mine. Its a very flexible pedal that can get way too hairy if not dialed in with care. You can get a rich heavy dark tone out of it....but it makes you wonder what the rest of that knob range is intended for

Very true. I just spent more time with it, and I keep ending back at treble and mid around 12 and bass around 10 (due to my already bass oriented setup). Overall close to a conservative middle for tone controls. Deviations outside of these are so dramatic, mostly not so good. Scooping the mids a tad can give that modern tone, but any more scooping results in an undefined mess. Too much of any of them is just harsh. So yeah, one trick pony once you dial it in; but a very good one trick pony that has it's place.
