bought a san dimas jackson strat :) need help on what to do about a headstock repair

Re: bought a san dimas jackson strat :) need help on what to do about a headstock rep

Well, Im not gonna wiz in your cheerios bro! Congrats! Thats sweet! Is it heavy? In answer to your question, Im NOT a Luthier type, but Id guess you may have a hard time sourcing a veneer unless you by another neck a harvest it. Or you could luckily score one. (check the Jackson forum to see if anyone there has a line on one...) If you can score one, and you have the skills to do the repair, go for it! But, if you cant get one, I dont think Id lose much sleep over it. Looks cool as is! Or paint it black and have someone paint the old gold Jackson logo on it like Randy's concorde. Just a thought.

^ That gold painted logo would look good on it.

Well, add doubter lil me to the club... Just bought a Charvel Avenger (?) or Charvel+Jackson partscaster, which, based on its straight HS layout and Kahler, shouldn't exist - but plays/sounds far too nice for me to care. And even manages to pull off a balanced active/passive (81+hotrail) electronics mix on ONE SHARED VOLUME POT (functional too!).

Then again, mine cost $199 w/ ohsc for a weird probably-mij... So who cares :-) on the other hand, i never recalled hearing a price from the OP, maybe his was far enough below that $1500 that parts and design originality also became quite unimportant?? I can kinda understand now, cuz the charvel plays circles around my ESP Std, and for that kinda money, i wouldnt care if it was built by nomadic gypsies out of duct tape and popsicle sticks

Re: bought a san dimas jackson strat :) need help on what to do about a headstock rep

im considering swapping the hum cancelling singles in this with some fender tex mex's my buddy luthier has. he said not to bother with restoring the headstock. if i came across a laminate id probably do it. but what the hell, its a sick guitar.

She's quite a looker, Jigglyshred. :bigthumb:

Do you think this headstock ever had a solid overlay? I'm asking because the pictures in the opening post suggest it was just painted black before somebody sanded it off without being too thorough. If that's the case, it could be refinished and have a decal applied without "too much trouble". On the other hand, adding an overlay would be a big hassle because of the headstock binding. IMHO.

If I were in your shoes, I'd rather stick to hum-canceling neck/middle pickups for this guitar.

Agreed on it being a sick guitar bro. Never seen a Dinky with a solid big leaf flame Maple body before ( owned a couple Hamers in a Vintage S and a Californian but NEVER seen a Jackson with a body like that just WOW!!)and man is that NICE!
2 things here that guitar deserves some thing better than a pair of pull out Tex Mex's in it!!
And IMO it also deserves to have that headstock restored so I disagree with your buddy here. On restoring that headstock I would just paint it back gloss Black and ether hand paint the Jackson logo or find a water-slide to drop under the final clear coat. Without doing that it just looks like a nice parts caster guitar.
Congrats big time on that find man!!!

Or a transparent Jackson logo sticker... Some had cool blonde headstocks, iirc

Re: bought a san dimas jackson strat :) need help on what to do about a headstock rep

Were they doing MOP headstock logos in those days? 'Cause that would be awesome to restore.

the only pickups that will fit in the neck and middle are maybe hotrails or something like that. problem is it cant really have ears on the sides. my luthier of 22 years has it right now. he said not to mess with the headstock. i may at some point want to. it was sanded off, it was originally black with the jackson logo on it and made in usa. it be nice to do, but we all know projects that are good ideas, sometimes never happen. yes this was a rare find. originally it was thought to be a players choice, but it is not. the body is a san dimas, theres no question about it. the neck will be pulled monday to do more digging. the guy it was bought from to my friends store did alot of research on it. i plan to talk to him when he comes in next week.

Look around for a flange-less dimarzio.

Re: bought a san dimas jackson strat :) need help on what to do about a headstock rep

how is the custom 5 seymour? its whats in the bridge. i have yet to plug this in. it needed a set up really bad, so its getting that done. just curious how that will work with a ebony fretboard and maple body. im assuming because its a very bright guitar, the pup will balance out based on the description of it on seymours main site. any suggestions of a replacement maybe for this if it sucks?

Re: bought a san dimas jackson strat :) need help on what to do about a headstock rep

Custom 5 might hit on that one as that Big leaf maple body is a lot softer than rock maple. It may be just a little on the bright side but should not be like a solid Maple old Carvin for example would be. I have owned quite a few old 88-90 solid maple with ebony board neck through Carvins and had good luck with the Dimarzio Tone Zone or a JB in them. The Custom 5 has a similar big fat open tone to the Zone but with more of a scoop in the mids so so it will be interesting to see how it sounds there. I worked for a Hamer dealer back in the late 80's and we had a couple Hamer Californian Elites had those solid flame big leaf maple bodies, a bolt on rock maple neck and ebony boards that sounded pretty good with JB's. I also think a Custom 8 or in particular Alt 8 might work well in that one.

He refinished the headstock on his Jackson and it turned out pretty sweet.

thats sick! i like the back plates. my luthier friend builds guitars too, so this wouldnt be too far off for him. i ordered a seymour custom/59 hybrid and a super distortion about a month ago, still waiting for them. im almost considering tossing one of those in this guitar as well. gotta see how the custom 5 goes first. funny thing is, i rebuilt my entire rig over this past summer/fall. need to get a delay pedal! dont know how much one misses an effect like that til its gone. need a 4 x 12 too so i can run my full bi amp rig. this christmas needs to hurry up and begone, so i can complete my set up. lol

Re: bought a san dimas jackson strat :) need help on what to do about a headstock rep

ive gotten to the bottom a little more on this strat. the neck is apparently off a mid 90s jackson. the body is san dimas though, as it does not match any other jackson made after the san dimas era. so it is partially a san dimas. i will most likely replace the neck at some point or keep it. i dont care what it is really, i love this guitar.

Re: bought a san dimas jackson strat :) need help on what to do about a headstock rep

Cool guitar. I'd be interested to hear what a 59/C is like in a maple body. A Super D will be crushing, no doubt :firedevil:.
