Bought it, but it depreciated so much I'd rather keep it.

Gear Ho
We all know when buying new that our purchases will depreciate in value, unless we're buying an exclusive piece that will stay at face value or appreciate in value.

Let's face it, recording gear takes the biggest hit, and then there's all the stuff that was available in mass quantities like L6, Boss, and dead rack gear.

This thread is about the pieces of gear you've bought which have depreciated badly, and now it's value is only what you place on it. I realize a lot of belongings fall into this category, so let's keep it to really good stuff that has almost no value for no good reason. But, you're compelled to keep it because it's got a large musical value attached to it.

I've got a Traynor YBA200 head and matched YBX1510 cab with it that, if I sold, I would have to practically give away based on what I paid. New, this setup is still priced at over $1500, but I'd be lucky to get $600 locally for it. So, there it sits in the corner under a cover.

Fender Deluxe 85 (made in America)

This cost $999 AUD in 1993, now this is a solid state amp, it's not the best amp for the price that I paid for it then but it has served me well. I recently had a look at the current tube amps from fender and they fall into the price range of my old deluxe amp, where as the current fender solid state amps all made in China range in price from $100 - $600 AUD (approx)

So for me the original purchase was never about resale value, but I realise that for some this is.

Oh I was only offered $200 AUD if I was to consider trading! My sentimental value was much greater so that deluxe 85 is still with me. :)

vox mini 3. I bought it right after release for 100 euros and few months later that reduced the price to 70 because everybody still prefers the micro cube.

Re: Bought it, but it depreciated so much I'd rather keep it.

I buy used for that very reason, with the exception of my Traditional Pro, which, oddly enough, hasn't depreciated THAT much (but it was 1800 to start with-not too bad for what it is) and my old 08 Hamer Vector Korina. It was an awesome guitar but I ended up selling it for 1700. It was more than I figured but much less than the 3k it was, brand new.

I feel for the guys that buy a 1k+ import. For instance, I have a prototype Washburn Dime thing with a maple neck/fb and while I got it for a steal, the sale price was actually 1199.

For an Indonesian guitar. Last I saw, similar Funky Munky geets from that run were selling for $300, used, Schaller Floyd, Duncan pups, jumbo frets, and all. If you can find one and like the styling, they're probably one of the best deals out there, used.

my 95 mexican strat... it's worth 200 bucks if i'm lucky

Any budget axe ... But the biggest hit was a shoddy Jackson PS6T that I bought as an impressionable youth from a real shyster of a GC salesman in Boston. Ended up paying nearly $900 for it. That's how stupid and young I was.

Re: Bought it, but it depreciated so much I'd rather keep it.

To tell you the truth, I can't really think of anything I've bought which has horribly depreciated in value. Maybe my $1,400 G&L and my $1,550 Mesa, both of which were recent purchases. But if I buy new, I don't ever expect to sell.

Nothing. My Cube 60 still holds value; the XL line hasn't really ruined it's price or anything.

Alesis ADAT. Awesome A/D converters, pushbutton simplicity, 8-track simultaneous 48KHz recording. Can't give it away today.

That's a great example. Those things were so expensive in the 90's, and 24 track studios were running 3 of them. Now, they're worth as much as a 10 year old VCR.

Boss MicroBR: bought it used for a hundred bucks. Literally a month later, saw them going for around $70 used. Probably worth 50 now...

Fender Deluxe 85

That was the first good amp I ever purchased. I was 17 years old and paid $400 (!!!!) for it at GC. A few years later I got $60 for it at a pawn shop...

Re: Bought it, but it depreciated so much I'd rather keep it.

My first band split the cost of a 4 track recorder. When we broke up someone kept it and I never got my money back. If someone sold it now and we split it up I might be able to buy a soda from a vending machine.

Re: Bought it, but it depreciated so much I'd rather keep it.

Dr. Veg has it pegged. My ADAT XT. I forget what I paid for it...I'm thinking 2000 which was a bargain for the day and what it did. Now I'm not sure why I just don't toss it in the bin.

Re: Bought it, but it depreciated so much I'd rather keep it.

Fulltone Tube Tape Echo.

If I leave the price high most people can't afford it and those who can would rather fork out a few more bills for a new one.

I drop the price low most people still can't afford it and everyone assumes there must be something wrong with it.

Re: Bought it, but it depreciated so much I'd rather keep it.

I bought a Line 6 AX2-212 combo the first or second year they were out. I paid $1700 for it with the floorboard and tax. Financing charges are on top of that...

I'd be lucky to get $300 for it today. So I keep it around.

Re: Bought it, but it depreciated so much I'd rather keep it.

My PODxt that I bought new about 6 years ago or so probably isn't worth much now.

Other than that, I almost never lose money on a deal. That isn't by accident.

My Aardvark cost just under a couple of grand Aus$.
I doubt I'd get more tha a couple of hundred for it, if that.

It still works fine, just no drivers for it past XP.:banghead:

My Zoom MRS 1608 multitrack recorder ...paid over a grand for it new 7-8 (maybe 9?) years ago... they're worth $150-200 now. Having said that it still works fine and does a decent job recording..
