Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

I'm looking for some low friction pots for my strat. 500K, short shaft, split shaft are my only requirements.

For those that have tried the Burns "vintage" (blue plastic housing) pots, what did you think of them? Are they easy to wire up due to not being able to ground to the casing?

Are there any other pots that are supposed to be really fast to turn with an even taper and decent tolerances? I've used CTS for a while, but I'm looking for something different.

Has anybody tried the YJM pot? That might be just what I'm looking for...

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

Bourns are okay by my standards. Decent quality, low friction and even taper.

Haven't used the blue ones, but the cheaper black Bournes are awesome. I don't know what the actual difference is. You use a washer with a lug on it to ground them, easy sleazy. They turn almost too easy.

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

I've used both the Bourns made EVH and Seymour Duncan branded YJM ones, both are great. Love the smooth and so easy to turn. It's easy to completely flip off!

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

Well, I ordered a few YJM pots off ebay and saved 15 bucks. They should be here next week and I'm eager to see how easy they are to turn, and how they sound.

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

The loosest feeling pots I've "come across in my travels" were Alpha full-sized, which I believe are made in Taiwan. To me, they actually feel like they are made at least as well as CTS pots. They also happen to be among the cheapest, at $1.20 a piece from CE Distribution (if you can legitimately register with them as a retailer or repair business), or about $1.50 each from Mouser.

I had an EVH one in my main guitar for a while; it worked well but it got scratchy quickly in the 0-2 range. I also like stock pots that came in old Ibanez guitars (Alpha?) - they're also nice and loose with good taper.

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

Does anyone know of some quality, low friction, 500k push push pots or can the CS turn the YJM pots into push push pots if asked?

Duncan doesn't make the YJM pots, Bourns does. I'd look into their push/pull stuff.

I could use a Push pull knob but just personal preference would be a push push I imagine it would be easier in a live situation instead of pushing or pulling the knob especially when your hands get all wet and slippery.

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

I installed the pots last night. One thing worth noting is that the soldering terminals are a good bit smaller than the normal CTS pots, so if you've got a treble bleed kit and a few wires on one terminal like I do, it's going to be a tight fit. I managed to shove it in though, and the pots are successfully installed. The turn very quickly - I'm impressed. I'm taking them to band practice today, looking forward to see how they fare in the heat of battle. Also, the taper.

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

So I tried these out last night a bit. I put them in two guitars - one guitar got two (one for each humbucker) and the other got a master volume.

Wow, I'm impressed. Very even taper. No matter where I put the volume it just sounds right. I LOVE the feel of the pot itself. I got these for $10 each, absolutely a deal compared to the $5 I normally spend on CTS.

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

Hi all,

I'm new to electric guitars...never owned or played one until about six months ago when I bought a 2008 PRS Allender. About 2 months ago I bought a 2014 PRS SE custom 24 and want to upgrade the electrical components. The tone pot is a push pull and has a lot of wiggle in either position and the knob is so smooth it is very difficult to pull it up. I almost have to get my finger nails under the edge to pull it up. I would like to get a complete package including volume and tone pots, hi end capacitors and everything wired and ready to drop in and just solder the pup and ground wires. Can anyone recommend a quality setup?

Re: Bourns and Other Low Friction Pots (YJM)

After 2 years of steady use in my no. 1 I finally had to replace the EVH pot. I have no problems with that.
