Boutique Guitar Showcase

The purpose of this thread is to let the rest of us know of some unique designs by private lbuilders that you might have come across. It is quite difficult to find your place in the crowded world of guitar-making, with small budgets and long, lonely hours of sanding. So this is a megaphone for those who are doing it alone, and putting that time in so we can marvel at their designs. Let's fill this thread up with awesome, inspiring instruments by people who saw what was out there and decided to do something differently.

So, no big company custom shops here. No 'look at this guy's version of a 50's Tele'. Just original designs by talented people, acoustic or electric.

I've been following Murray Kuun's designs for awhile. What a strange mind this guy has. Modern, but there is a reverence there for classic lines.

I have two Kauer's. Doug makes fantastic instruments and is a good guy. I stumbled on his stuff when I was looking for a better Firebird.

I love that Starliner. But it's weird, in the first paragraph, he calls it Spanish Mahogany body and neck. Then, in the specs, he says Spanish Cedar body and neck. Either way, it's simple and gorgeous.

There's a Koa Starliner on Reverb right now that is gorgeous.

Spanish Cedar is actually not Cedar, it's part of the Mahogany family. It's one of Doug's favorite woods to work with from what I recall.

Re: Boutique Guitar Showcase

I played Teuffel Guitars at NAMM and was amazed. Had a great discussion with the builder, too. The first one, the Tesla is one that I played. One of the best guitars I have played. The 3 buttons below the strings are a killswitch, a switch that adds hum and buzz, like a shorted cable (!!!), and a button that sends an internal microphone feeding back on itself with a very loud, high pitched squeal. Wow.

What a guitar!

Re: Boutique Guitar Showcase

I'm going to my first Guitar Collector Convention/Show in several decades (that is not NAMM) next week.

I hope there's a lot of this kind of weird high end stuff there.

If it's all Strats and LPs I'm going to be super disappointed.
