As a guitar addicted I’m glad I came across this thread. I’ll contribute with a well known Italian artisan of which it has many times been spoken well. The owner of a musical instruments shop I know told me that one day a guy came up with a quite old Taos he bought second-hand that had a broken (glued) neck for falling. It looked pretty unsolvable, but he called directly the artisan, and he just repaired it completely free! (I’m not sponsored lol, I’m just curious)

When will those booh-teek builders ever learn from past experience? Their design are unique but too radical for the average guitarist. I don't see 'em ever becoming mainstream. THere is a reason Parker guitars never really took off. Who plays them? Reeves Gabrels and that's about it I guess.
Some of the designs posted here even look pretty fragile and therefore not fit for touring. And not comfortable either. Probably for display at the Smithsonian or Hard Rock Cafe and that's it.
In the end people will ultimately resort to the traditionals (LP, Strat, Tele).

I am under no impression those guitars are for the average guitarist. Or that they would ever become mainstream. I just appreciate builders that look at design of the instrument a different way. They don't have to sell mass amounts of instruments to make a living, either.

I don't want these lovely boutique guitars to become mainstream because they would then be lamestream. They are doing fine on their own and they develop a cult following. Besides Strats, Teles & LP's are becoming passe and the new Millennials will have new classics in these boutique guitars.

Of course not. They make a living by charging you 10 grand for something you can't even use cause it's too fragile and ergonomically unpleasant.

Also Adrian Belew plays Parkers. I think their design is really cool, but their price offer is ridiculously high, so I never even though of buying one even if I wish.
However I’m not of the same advice about hand crafted guitars. The reason this guitars doesn’t become mainstream is by many reasons: first of all the brand is unknown. PRS was a great Botique guitar until Santana though it was worry the attention, making prs a Gibson/fender competitor. Secondly, artisans doesn’t have an industrial complex to cut off sale prices, and the prices are really high for the labor... currently I know only real professionals who ever bought a handcrafted guitar, paying around €4-5k.
Some of these guitars se see are really fancy and no sense, I’ll give you this point (just think at Prince’s guitar lol), but I’ve tried some of the serious ones and they have a great value. I remember an incredible simil superstrat (as Parker is) which was incredibly balanced, perfectly built, nearly played itself, but as a second hand item costed €2k... I’ll live it to the professionals.
Latest, as this artisans doesn’t have a strong brand (as the great ones we all know), even if their products are of the highest quality, their value is 1/4 when sold as second hand... this is the market rule.

If you don’t like boutique guitars, that’s fine, but you really need to just stay the hell out of it if you’ve got nothing constructive to offer. What is funny is had you ever played one of these, you'd see how much thought to ergonomics there actually is. And how un-ergonomic standard designs are. You can certainly say you don't like the designs, but a comment like that is silly and uninformed.

Doug does make some really nice instruments.
Personally I gravitate toward the Gibson style more than the Fender style that Doug makes, but yes...he makes a great guitar.

LMFAO! I almost fell of my chair laughing at your statement. Did you really believe that was true or did you just make it up to take a swing at me? That same statement was used by Parket targeting generation X with its radical design in the mid 90s. You do remember that ad, do you not?
If Strats etc are becoming passe, I guess builders of LP and strat copies need to take a clue from you cause they've been losing money all these years making super strats and copies that are more expensive than the originals (Suhrs, Andersons, etc,).
