Boutique Pickups versus Duncans

I have one Les Paul that has had every pickup known to man (it seems like) in it. It is a very bright LP, and I finally found a match for the guitar -- a set of WCR Goodwoods. Now the guitar sounds incredible. I had every Duncan in it at least once at one time or another, and also several very expensive boutique alternatives. I have another Les Paul that I tried some of the boutique pickups in, and they sounded great, but not what I wanted. I ordered at set of 59s from Matt (MartinSixString) here on the forum, popped them in, and WOW!!! Where have these things been???? They sounded terrible in my other Les Paul, but it seems like a perfect match for this guitar. I don't know if I got a 'magic' set or what, but these pickups sound perfect! The tones that I get with this matchup match what I've been wanting from a Les Paul for a long time.

Just my weird experience.

Re: Boutique Pickups versus Duncans

Your experience is a good illustration of why it's frustrating when people spend tons of time nitpicking which pickup they should try.

The ONLY way to find out is to start installing as many different ones as possible. Glad you found some good ones.
