Got a replacement set for Classic 20 from Bob at Eurotubes.
And it is...
GREAT!!!!!!!!!
The cleans are less middy. Turn up the mids now and the mud doesn't happen. Cranking up the gain gets rid of the fizz on the top end and gets us very nicely into Marshall territory.
The key difference with the replaced tubes is the extent of articulation. Very very different. Clean, cranked, and clean + pedals going through it are really very very nice now. The Analogman SD-1/808/silver is very good through this amp clean. So a complete JJ set (2 ECC83's and 2 EL84's) really made this a great amp. Now, with a different speaker, it may become totally killer.
As I read reviews on the Eurotubes board last night, anyone who had any Peavey Classic was just raving about the differences. That's when I knew I had done a good thing. Tonight I heard it.
