Alnico 2 pickups can be a great match for an ash body, yielding a chewy, textured tone, quite unlike the clean and dry sound usually going on with alder. Wood is inconsistent, and ash is more inconsistent, as some of you know very well already.
Brass block is Charvel territory - up to you, whether "dat a goodting or a badting".

Haven't read the rest of thread...lots of words and I'm lazy. I will be putting an oversized brass block in my American Standard in the next couple weeks.
