Brass Tremolo block

I'm looking for a brass block for my Callaham vintage style tremolo. Does anyone make these or are they stickly custom jobs? The steel block is nice, but it's a little bright.

Re: Brass Tremolo block

I could be wrong But I always thought a Brass trem block was used more
for a sutain Issue Than for a different tone?? I could see a brass nut
or saddles changing the sonic elements. Once the string passes the saddle
and heads South, I can't see anything the string touches having a tonal
Effect?? BUT !! I just happen to have a brass trem block in my parts
draw. Next time I change the strings on my strat, Maybe Put it in
and post before and after clips??

Re: Brass Tremolo block

I have a custom built brass trem block on my '89 American standard. I did notice that it mellowed out the sound a little and the sustain increased a little as well. It is not a huge difference, but it is an improvement over the stock cast unit.

I'm not sure what kind of difference you will hear going from a high quality steel unit like the Callaham to a brass one though.

Yes...the diff is subtle and whether one material sounds better or not is subjective. I've heard Japanese Fender vibratos made of pot metal that sounded really lively and good and steel vibrato blocks from Dimarzio that should have sounded good but instead sounded thinner than the cheapies!

Personally, I like the way the Fender Custom Shop vintage RI Strat bridge/vibrato unit sounds just fine. That's the one I use.

I've had mine so long I don't even remember how I got it? Probaly found
it in a parts bin at a guitar show? That's where I got a original fender
brass hardtail bridge that I had on my 73' strat( It was stolen tho)
here's a link to one on ebay.

Re: Brass Tremolo block

Dre,

I had my trem block machined by a good friend that is a professional tool and die maker.

I would try the ebay route like kmcguitars suggested first, it will probably be faster and cheaper.

If that doesn't work. I would start by talking to machine shops that specialize in building race engines, a lot of these guys like to take on side projects like this for some exta cash.

There may be a company that already makes them, but I don't know of any.

Sorry I can't be of more help,

-John
