Well I missed the brobucker. Maybe you did too...and $160 is a lot of coin for a pickup. But the elusive 10K PAF still seems like a likely sweet spot. The Demon is a bit demonic for many.
Meanwhile, Dimarzio calls the Breed neck a hot, warm PAF - fatter, louder version of the PAF pro. That should work, right? Tried the FRED in this axe though and ouch - too bright.
The first time I tried the Dimarzio Breed Neck pickup, in the test axe (SG) it had the excellent lows of the Duncan Blues Trembucker, but with more mids. Sounded good clean but not as sweet as the FRED and the highs were brittle and thin. Under OD the solid lows & mids were great and under lots o' gain the thing screamed. My note was: "this does not balance so well as a bridge pickup, *extremely* sensitive to pole adjustment."
Well I gave it another chance, because the CC in the Superstrat sounded sweet but the lows were mushy. So, back again with the Breed Neck. Adjusted poles (hi E and B down below the flatwork), and turned down the mids in the amp - this thing needs some scoop, or the mids will hurt. The high end is actually kinda nice. I think it works. Don't know what I did different 'cept lower those allens. Only had it half a day when I did this update so the clips are kinda random. Same settings though as some CC clips (coming in a few), so you can compare.
AX84 Cal Dreamer (think Dlx Reverb) Treble at 5 (to make up for low vol & MVol), bass at 4, mids at 2. Vol at about 2 1/2 which is normally loud but I have a pre-PI Mvol. A touch of compression on the recording.
The dirty clip is actually pretty low volume (same as above), using a MXR Distortion+, dist'n cranked. Kinda in a hurry but the Disto+ is good as it leaves in a lot of lows but cranks the gain. Main point: check out that feedback, that at near bedroom levels.. Cool. And I'm no expert at getting harmonics & this thing is throwing them out all over. A short SD1 clip is there too, which just reminded me how badly the SD1 sucks
mg:
I'll work on getting the CC clips, same amp settings up there as well. The CC had this really characteristic growl thing going...Meanwhile, I'm liking the cleaner sound of the Breed. balances well (but does not mix as well) with the Jazz neck. And split it is fairly thin, not like a JB or Custom.
