A Duncan Distortion is the classic rock guitar pickup and sounds great in Les Pauls and other mahog bodies from my experience. The JB, while great in fat strats, might be a bit thin in your guitar.
Classic metal doesn't always equate to JB or Distortion. Those two pickups didn't really explode on the scene until the 80's. The JB may have been available beforehand, but the massive explosion in popularity and sales came several years later after word caught on about it. Before then, it was stock or the SuperD.
I will attest that the Custom 5 is excellent for that stuff though even though it hasn't been available near as long on the retail side. Since changing the mag in my CC to an A5, I'm getting tones from my hands that I haven't heard in a long time. If you don't like vintage output but like the '59, go with the C5. It really is a '59 on steroids.
