Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

You can probably ask a dealer to check if they can order one as a floor shop custom. I don't see why it'd be an issue. There's several sellers on eBay that are willing.

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

I checked the 59N and it is a polished A5, but in the neck I think that should be ok.

I looked again at the Seymour Duncan website and they have three vintage output trembuckers, the 59, Pearly Gates and Alnico Pro ii. The 59 has been discussed quite a bit and sounds like it would need a magnet swap to sound any good, certainly doable but would be great to find something that sounds good out of the box. The Pearly Gates set I have in an Epiphone Les Paul and it sounds good there, the bridge is nice and sizzley but I'm worried it may be a bit bright in a strat style guitar with Floyd rose, but it's an option.

Then there's the Alnico pro II set, which looks pretty good right now based on the description. The description says it is good for blues and rock and has a softer and sweeter tone that I think I would like. And that guy with the top hat from that one band sounds pretty good with them. Any thoughts?

Not a major user of HBs but Seth Lover's are the best I'd found until I loaded up a set of Fishman's but I don't think you want to go active.

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

This is getting close to the tones I am looking for, especially the lead tones. And the guy used a Charvel which is close to the San Dimas body I used for my partscaster. Think I may start with a zebra set of these and take things from there.

The WLH is available in trembucker, I just checked EBay and there are about 15 new ones in all the normal finish options. TB-18b is what you are looking for.

Thanks dude, are the eBay ones legit? It's weird how regular stores don't seem to carry them. If they are the real deal I'd be interested,

Thanks!

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

I have a WLH trembucker, all legit and sounded great in my ash/ maple G&L Legacy. I have swapped the pickguard now though as I wanted the guitar back to SSS but may swap out the secret humbucker in my Tyler for the WLH.

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

Thanks for all the suggestions, looks like the rough cast Alnico V into a 59 trembucker could be a good place to start. Was hoping that something off the shelf would work, but I could perform a magnetectomy myself. My 59 neck pickup is from the late 90s, I wonder when Seymour Duncan made the switch to regular A5s, and why they would do it if it doesn't sound as good. Maybe you would know what magnet is likely in the neck pickup, it's from about 1998-1999. I already have a couple of A4 magnets. Maybe I could use a RCA5 for a bridge trembucker and put one of the A4s in the existing 59 neck humbucker.

I was also thinking WLH as the ones I have sound like a 59+, though I haven't seen them in trembucker configuration. Perhaps Seymour Duncan could make me either a Trembucker WLH or RCA5 59 without going full custom shop.

I think they can...but contact them for sure. I don't know if bobbin size or magnet can be stretched to fit the Shop Floor Customs. If you can get exactly what you want, that would be ideal.

Yeah? Was this a Custom Shop order, or did you find it stock?

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

I'm a blues player. My favorite guitarists are guys like BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Peter Green...

59's or Seth Lovers or Pearly Gates are what I use for humbuckers.

New 59's sound good but now use polished A5 magnets and lack mids and have a sharper edge to the treble than old 59's from the 90's and before. Seymour originally designed the '59 around a Roughcast A5 magnet to sound like a 59 Gibson A5 PAF. ,

So get some Roughcast A5 magnets from Addiction FX and make a new 59 sound great again and more like a 55 year old A5 Gibson PAF from 1959 or the very early 1960's.

I even put RCA5 magnets in my Seth Lovers.

Pearly Gates are another great choice and get great pinch harmonics and fat soloing tones from the bridge PG and nice chordal tones and soloing tones from the neck PG. They're Alnico 2.

You don't have to spend a bundle or search for old 59's.

Hey Lewguitar, thanks again for the Telecaster with a Stratocaster neck p'up. the pickup was off center and got that taken care of sounded really good before now it sounds great even though a tele is a pain to play.

but to tne real reason I called, have you tried Fishman humbuckers?

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

WLH was the first thing that came to mind upon reading OP's post.

The next 2 candidates that came to mind were the Custom 5 and the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF bridge. The 36th, to me, is pretty mids-heavy and thus not open-sounding, but it is a very musical, responsive pickup.

Custom 5 trembucker or F-spaced 36th bridge might be the easiest to source. If those don't work out, I'd then look for a WLH trembucker next, with a 59 trembucker bridge being the next alternative after that.

Re: post immediately above, I only have experience with the Iron Gear Rolling Mill overwound version. It was very hot and felt a bit like a JB to me. I don't have experience with the regular Rolling Mill bridge. The regular Rolling Mill neck is pretty nice, just a very decent A5 PAF.

I bought it from a UK forum member, standard S.D packaging and markings. No custom shop or shop floor references like on some of my other custom shop pick ups so I'm assuming it's a regular build.

Oh cool! I learned something today!
I wonder if they are doing this with the Saturday Night Specials, too.

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

Thanks for all the responses. Was ABing my JB/59 guitar against my Les Paul with the WLHs last night. I know a Strat type guitar won't sound like a Les Paul, but I enjoy the WLHs in the Les Paul so much I'm going to try a set in the partscaster.
Incidentally the JB/59 set used to be in the Les Paul and when I swapped in the WLHs it was a big improvement, at least in terms of getting a dynamic and more vintage Les Paul tone. The neck WLH pickup is perfect, good balance of richness and definition with no boominess or mud.

Re: Bridge humbucker for blues rock - not too compressed

I think the 59/custom suggested earlier would work pretty well. My preference would probably be a Custom Custom bridge and Alnico Pro II in the neck. Slightly hot rodded, but very round and bluesy. The CC also cleaned up pretty well for me. As for the Screamin Demon mentions, I love the pickup but I think the voicing is a little off for most bluesy stuff.

This is seller I was talking about. *I've ordered from him before. Blackouts and a floor shop custom. 100% feedback

Mike usually has a good selection of stuff in stock at any time and have never heard of anyone that bought online having a problem with him. He's an odd duck in person, though.

This is my favorite combination, as they give me exactly what you describe. I use mine in a Music Man Silhouette Special with a 5 way switch. This combo is also great for a band with 1 guitar.

Please tell me more about the custom custom. I had assumed this was an overwound pickup, almost as powerful as the JB. How does it compare to the JB and something more Aknico ii PAF like a Pearly Gates (picking two pickups i own).

Thanks so much
