Please tell me more about the custom custom. I had assumed this was an overwound pickup, almost as powerful as the JB. How does it compare to the JB and something more Aknico ii PAF like a Pearly Gates (picking two pickups i own).

To me, the CC doesn't feel like the JB at all. It certainly has more compression at full volume than a PG, but not nearly as much as the JB to my ear. If you are concerned that the CC will have too much compression, then the 59/Custom is probably a good way to go.

The CC is nothing like a JB. It doesn't feel compressed, and it is overwound. It has more grind than cut. Great for a band with 1 guitar. Takes up a lot of sonic space. Magical though a Plexi-ish amp. It actually sounds good split, too. I like the Hybrid as well, but that has a much more open, classic sound.

Seth Lover W/UOA5 (roughcast) for PAF levels and tone, 59/Custom as is for a great "louder" pickup with ability to get clean and also has strong mids, yet gets an "edgy" sound due to one coil being wound hotter than the other. I probably said this already, but decided to toss in my shorter 2 cents again. What Mincer said + 1

The Seth with RCA5 magnet is great too. That's how I use my set and it sounds like a set of 1960 or 61 Gibson humbuckers...like the tone of the humbuckers in the best semi-hollowbody I ever owned: the '60 Gibson ES-355 that was stolen from me 30 years ago .

UOA5 is cool too. But RCA5 gets the sound I'm after: Clapton's tone with Cream when he played his SG or ES-335.

Thank you for the suggestion, I saw UORCA5 a lot on this forum so I tried it, liked it, and let it go. I bet the RC A5 is tighter at the bottom and more focused in the mid-highs from what I've read these last 6 months or so. Does that sound right, my speculation on the RC A5?

I tried UOA5 and liked it but let it go too. Cool sound but not the sound I was hearing in my head. Treble a little too rounded - mids and bass a little too spongey.

I was after the sound of a real 1960 - 63 A5 Gibson humbucker and UOA5 isn't the way to get it.

Nor is a polished A5 magnet. Too sharp in the treble and not enough midrange.

RCA5 is the right magnet. It's what Gibson used and it gives a 59 or Seth Lover that particular sound.

If you have owned guitars with those old Gibson pickups (and I have...) you'll recognize that sound, and the way it makes you feel, in a heartbeat.

When I said "let it go" I meant: let it go, as in leave it alone, let it go as is. I can see how easily that could be mis-read. It seems, to me, lately, that I am not saying what I mean, leave things out that I shouldn't when asking simple, or worse; complicated questions. Thanks Demanic for pointing that out.
Lewguitar, I looked at all my mags today and no RC A5, so it has been over ten years since I bought all my magnets, from addictionFX, now they are on EBay, but I would prefer a different option, so is Philidelfia(spelling?)parts a good place? Or is there a better, more quality controlled place that you would get mags from?

I get mine from addiction fx. They ship fast and the quality seems high. I order them direct. I don't buy (or sell) on eBay if I can avoid it.

At one point, you could order of the AFX site and I'd even call in and order from Hannah. I do know people have had issues with them and then they got better and then issues came back up and so on and so forth. Last time I tried to call or email, I never got to anyone.

I've not tracked down a wide selection of magnets from different foundries, but guys that have do suggest that you may even find darker or more open characteristics in the same type of magnet (let's say A8, as a random example) from different sources. Like I said, I lost interest in the mag-swapping fad, so that's from people that have knowledge of it and not from my own experience.

It's been quite some time since I dealt with AFX, going to other sources after another round of them being hard to reach. Other times, orders were not correct, which others have also mentioned as well IIRC. If you search through the threads about them, it appears they do have a bit of a hot-cold track record.

Maybe check with LtKojak about his mag resources. While I think he does get some in EU, he does seem that he's part of that ones that has helped to spearhead trying out a lot of different options and from different sources.

Since you asked options other than AFX, I think Jeremy also provided an option. You can probably hit up google and see if there are more options. They are only a few bucks a pop, so shop around and see what suits you. But I think you are on to something....why stick with any one vendor because it's become convention with a few.

It's been a few days since I picked up a guitar.

But previously I'd been experimenting with roughcast alnico 4 in a set of Pearly Gates and after giving my ears a little rest for a few days, I plugged in again today.

What a beautiful sound! Played for about 10 minutes before realizing the sound I was loving was coming from a set of brand new 59's I had put Addiction FX roughcast A5 in!

The guitar with A4 Pearlies was still hanging on the wall.

So I have no need to shop around. I'm hearing the best sound I've ever gotten from that guitar - my much played, much gigged and well worn '95 PRS Custom 22.

But sure...shop around if you feel the need.

Me? I'm very pleased with the magnets I get from Addiction.

For what it's worth, mid-late last year I ordered 'the kitchen sink' (two of everything) directly through AFX web site using PayPal and everything came in, reasonably quick shipping, well-packed, everything complete in order, no back orders, no mistakes.
