Bridge Humbucker in Neck of a lespaul

Hello Guys,

Like the title says, i think my neck humbucker is a little boomy, tried most of the regular stuff and tips, but i still feel that the neck lacks definition. would it be helpful if i put a bridge humbucker( a new one) in the neck.

How would it sound, has anyone done this? I searched everywhere and all the questions are about putting a neck humbucker in the bridge.

I think Vivian Campbell did this back in the early days with Dio. I don't know much about how it worked. EDIT: Just had a look around, and it looks like he used the very loud X2N humbucker from DiMarzio for a while.

Bridge HB's are wound hotter, and in the neck slot are going to be warmer with more mids and low end.

What PU's in the neck now? A mag swap may fix the EQ for you.

Something like a Duncan JazzN would give clarity, without being boomy, or a '59N with an A4 magnet.

I agree with the Jazz neck...but as far as a bridge humbucker goes...that is quite common. 'Bridge' and 'Neck' are just names. Feel free to mix and match.

as others have alluded to, the reason the bridge humbucker is brighter is the physical position. not the pup itself.

I have a bridge version of the SD Alnico Pro II in the bridge and neck of my Les Paul Standard. Sounds great for me. I mostly play through a JCM 800 FWIW.

My goldtop LP has pullup tone pots to split the pickups.

I use that LP for cleans much more than my traditionally wired LP's. I dialed it in with an unoriented Custom 5/Jazz B in the neck. The neck is loud and clear, even split. In the middle position, I can get a few nice combinations of split/full and visa versa.

Van Halen has a hotter wound neck pickup on his Wolfgang guitars. I say a bridge pickup in the neck works, but you have to do some work on it. I had a double fat Strat with a JB in the neck position. I had to switch the A5 with an A3, cut the screws parallel to the baseplate and put it in the same position as it would on a 24 fret guitar, but it became the perfect match for an A2 JB in the end.

Or you could just get a neck HB to begin with.

Well I had a JB and an A3 lying around, so I cut neck slot in a single bridge HB strat pickguard. I originally intended to put an A4 59 in that slot. But then I noticed the JB when I was looking around for the 59.

But yes, for most people in most circumstances, you might as well just get a neck pickup.
